Discussion
friend needs new cams 98 about 38k cams worn whats usual involved any further work req is it major funds are limited so looking for a mech and not a tvr garage !!! any suggestions or dealings.. good oil press (35) rest seems fine full service in past doesnt miss fire info would be eye opener many regards
Cam change basically involves everything that, tappet setting involves, so:
Removal of cams.
Check clearances on bucket shims, check timing, check, double check, check again and put everything back together.
As for required new bits if cams are knackered, i'd say, and I may be contradicted on this, 2 x cams, set of bucket/followers, shims to suit (you won't know what you need until you trial fit the cams).
As for a non TVR specialist garage, I'd be very wary of using someone to do this who hasn't done it before, it's not easy from evything people say, and probably a job best tackled by someone who's done it before. You may get a better hourly rate from your local garage, but if it takes twice as long as a TVR specialist you may find it false economy. Worth thinking about.
Good luck
