I have a 530d saloon auto - On a 70mph cruise it dose 40-42mpg. On my 25 commute (mainly A roads, but a lot of roundabouts) it does 34mpg. Being driven like it begs to be driven - nearer 30mpg.
Just done a 1000 mile round trip to Le Mans - 37mpg
Compared to other diesels I have had it is at its best once up to speed and warm. For short urban journeys it seems to take longer to become 'efficient' than a smaller engine.
Overall, a great car.

I've just done 330 miles on my 2001 530i manual today - for the first bit, the M5 from Exeter to Worcester, I obtained 39.2mpg average by travelling at an indicated 70mph (GPS 65mph).
Once I got to Worcester I got bored with the whole economy thing, drove through rush our traffic, back onto the M5, down to Southampton via A34/M4 etc and when I arrived the average had only dropped to 35.7.
Once warmed up and on a run these engines are very efficient indeed.

Bit off topic I know but my e34 540i touring does 16 - 18 on my commute (50 mins to do 12.5 miles) and I did get it to 29.4 on a run but then I got bored and it dropped to 27.4 which is not too bad. I usually average 25-26 on a normal run though. Its easy to drop it to late teens with some spirited driving, sounds bad but the car I had before was an e34 535i sport which was even worse!

Similar car and similar consumption for me. Chipping helps economy, if you can resist the temptation! 2k rpm at indicated 90mph cruise gives c35 mpg too.Just done a 1000 mile round trip to Le Mans - 37mpg

Over the weekend I set the consumption joining the motorway. Sixty odd miles later, it was reading 34mpg!
I don't think thats bad for a car thats done 100000 miles.
My mate seems to average about 17mpg in his.Does 23-24 for normal back and forth to work driving.

Seriously though your friend needs to take a trip to his local VW specialist and buy a set of MAF sensors. They seem to be almost a yearly change for me

They are never more than 10mpg apart on consumption over similar driving, usually closer to 7mpg difference.

I much prefer the 530i. It is smoother, more refined, sounds nicer and is a pleasure to drive although some of this is becuase it's a Sport whereas the 530d is an SE.I get 23mpg around town from my 530i, and 28-30 from the 530d. On a Motorway run I get 38mpg from the 530i and 45mpg from the 530d.
