A number of posts that I have read while researching some new suspension have mentioned to go for the Mk2 top mounts when replacing Mk1 suspension.

Can anyone explain why this is?

I think the main reason is to give more suspension travel. A lowered Mk1 tends to sit on the bump-stops on hard cornering so if you can increase the suspension travel you can keep it off the bump-stops and let the shocks/springs do their work.
