Loads of different ways into racing, so it will really depend on things like budget etc.

What do you want to do? I'm guessing from the fact you've posted here that you want to race BMWs, in which case you should look at something like the Kuhmo series - you can enter anything from a 318is up.

Bear in mind that rather than just stripping a car out and taking it racing, you need to strip it, cage it, fit a proper seat, extinguishers, brakes, tyres, trailer, tow car etc etc - it all adds up.

Join a local Motor Club - that's the best way of finding advice & local events to compete in

Your best bet is to buy a race car, trust me it's alot easier and cheaper, if it's BM's you want to race then I know a few decent M3 cars that are for sale, happy to put you onto the owners, I can also highly recommend the Kumho BMW championship, I started there and it's a great way to start

Your cheapest way to run a BMW in a competitive series could well be the Easytrack Production BMW Cup (PBMWC) E30 318 / 320
