Bus Lanes- and uses of them
Discussion
Why is it that you get some drivers who just cant resist using Bus Lanes during the times that they are not supposed too, then you get large queues of cars etc sitting in stationary traffic when they could legally be using the same Bus lane.....very strange to me!
Reminds me of a funny story that happened recently.
I was sitting in my work car in stationary traffic but also monitoring the Nearside Bus Lane for those who think that their time is more important than others.
The time was 1700hrs and the Bus lane in question was in operation between 1600-1900hrs.
Along comes an old boy who looked a bit like Uncle Albert from Only Fools and Horses...driving past us then turning Left into a side street some distance later.
We followed and pulled up alongside and he appeared startled.I said, "what happened back there with the Bus lane"?
He replied, "Its ok son, i can use it because its between 4 and 7pm".....made me smile, then i drove off for another doughnut.
How many people on here would....use a Buslane without hesitation?

Tony, living in London I see people illegally using bus lanes every single day. I travel to/from the office on the bus and often play a "how long before someone breaks rank and sneaks up the bus lane" game (sad I know). When the regular lane is backed up and the bus lane free, it's usually somewhere between 5 and 20 seconds before someone goes for it. Usually closely followed by the "hey, that's not fair, but I'm going to follow your lead" brigade.
Minicab drivers are usually the worst culprits. But then they often are for a great deal of other common motoring no-nos.
Must be a fortune to be made catching them. What measures are actually used for monitoring bus lanes, apart from BiB spotting someone. I am aware that some buses have onboard cameras, which seems the sensible way to go about this, i.e. using the bus that is being held up by the vehicle illegally in the bus lane to catch the scrote is the ideal way to ensure the fine is justified (as opposed to a static camera that just snaps anyone entering the lane during certain times - often for a short distance, and often when there are no buses to be seen).
Just wondering.

Busses are equipped with cameras..well some of them and to be honest we dont have a lot to do with them other than attending Collisions as a result of people using them or when someone has parked their car in them.
I dealt with a serious Collision the other month whereby a car was stealing a few yards in a Bus lane and a lad riding an R1 turned right into a private driveway after the 2 other lanes of traffic had stopped to giveway. Sadly, neither the Motorcyclist or the car driver saw each other until it was too late.
Sadly, as you know, this is not a rare occurance, especially in the Capital.

What gets me is the number of people who don't use the bus lanes even when its permitted!
Seems some people can't read the 7am till 10am sign - and then when you come along in the bus lane at 10:30 you get all manner of abusive stares from people in the traffic queue along side.
Best kept sectret in London is that at certain times you can use the bus lanes - no don't got telling every one!

I'm a resident of our Capital, and when I used to drive to work I would sometimes use the bus lane on my way home (either on the A13 running from the City to Blackwall Tunnel or on the road from South Quay to Blackwall). This was when they were for buses only, but my logic goes - no bus in bus lane, long queue of cars ahead, empty bus lane, use bus lane to get home more quickly. I found it ridiculous to be sat in a traffic jam when there is a perfectly good lane on my left that is completely empty. It had nothing to do with 'my time being more important than everyone elses', in fact by using the bus lane I'm reducing the queue for people behind me
I hate bus lanes, some are useful but too many are simply tools councils use to piss motorists off and force people out of their cars.

One summer's evening I was tootling down a bus lane when I espied a white van ahead having been stopped by a Panda. I signalled to pull out when the policeman who was speaking to the driver of the van looked up and motioned me to stop. I did and he walked towards me.

He looked the car over and then said, "Is this a bus, sir?"
"No." I replied.
"Then what makes you think you can drive it in a bus lane then, sir?" he enquired.
"The time!" I said.
"Oh." he said, "And why do you think the time makes a difference?"
"Because it says so on the board at the start of the bus lane." I replied.
"Does it?" he asked. "I didn't know. Anyway, f
k off, I'm going to do this b
d for something!" That's literal. It stuck very clearly in my memory. Can't think why!

Same up here in Leeds .. shhh - keep it quiet!!
I love cruising up the bus lane and copping dirty looks from all the muppets who are sat in a long queue. I think they should be done for not using the bus lane when they can .. surely it's lack of observation.
As a non resident of the Capital, (yes I know I know hillbilies are here again!) must say I do find the variation in times when you can and cannot use the bus lanes an additional distraction.
That doesn't stop me using them when I'm clear it is allowed but it does add to the workload.
