project mayfair - rotten, unloved and drowned
Discussion
bought this mayfair on the 9th of december last year (and then crashed my saxo the same day - fate!)
it had been stood for four years and was green with mould and rotten to the core, the clutch was siezed solid as where the brakes - ive since worked out that it was under at least a foot of water in the floods in Hull last year!!
we unseized the clutch and it drove okish, so stripped it to a shell (discovering in the process that the front frame was bent - the worse ive ever seen in a car, someone had chopped the rear legs of the another frame and lengthened the frame in this one to reach the floor - not good!)
after some difficult porta-packing we got it back square and then fitted floors, inner sills, outer sills, a panels, wings, scuttle, front, lower rear qtrs, back valance, boot repair, and new(ish) doors, boot and bonnet. i did some of the prep, but found it very difficult to use sanding tools (saxo crash again) so a mate of mind kindly offered to paint it as a 'mates-rates' job.
i bought a low miles (5000) front frame assembly as it was difficult to trust anything attached to the bent mess it was supplied with and fitted that.
the engine was partially stripped and cleaned, then repainted with many new bits.
im just one with the rear frame as all the components are junk, been stood under water then left has ment thay have all gone rusty and siezed - so its all going to be new.

i still need a trim set and a few other bits, but all been well this is going to be my daily drive, as long as i can cope pressing the clutch (my feet are a mess from the saxo), if not i guess it will be a bargain on ebay for someone!
still, its another one saved, and a boring 1984 unloved mayfair at that.

no, i bought it from a mate in hull.
the damp issue isnt a problem as its been stripped to a shell and everything is getting stripped and reconned. ive skipped the seats and what not - it stunk
im doing it so it looks more like a mid 1970's, but with 12" wheels and brakes. going for that fairly standard look for cheap running costs and insurance.

im hoping the verto clutch will be light enough, i managed to drive a transit back from normandy in france last weekend ok!
if its too much im going to sell it, i cant really afford to keep it antway as i have to pay to get my sprint shell painted. ive acutally got a complete mk1 auto engine and frame comming for that.
an automatic mini sprint - the shame!
i thought you would have kept the auto frame for your racers?
cheers for offering though!
