A lot will come down to personal taste..you either like or don't like autos. On a big comfortable barge auto is essential. Car to drive quickly down a twisty B road then a manual is better....in my opinion.
Things also to take into account are extra cost to get an auto, worse mpg and often higher tax. Speaking of the traditional Auto's rather than the new DSG type ones of course.

I bought the wife a new Cooper auto for her birthday in March. She’s done about 4k miles.
I don’t like automatics and my cars are manuals.
She stipulated the auto and is very pleased with it. She doesn’t drive quickly. When I drive it I find it quite relaxing, if very slow. This is probably an unfair comparison against my cars.
My only complaint is that sometimes there seems to be a brief delay between pressing the throttle and anything happening at all. I don’t mean it’s slow, I mean press, pause, go. I suspect that it might be selecting neutral because it tends to only do it when you have been stationary for a while. I have known other auto boxes to do this by design as a fuel saving feature. Maybe it’s supposed to do this.
It changes down quite readily, tends not to have the right gear for fast cornering. But you can always sort this by the flappy paddles and a bit of DIY gear changing.
