I have just bought a 2001 S40 1.9 D (102bhp) with 138,000 miles.

It starts easily and runs well, but when sitting still in neutral, it will often cut out. Once it does, I can start it up again with no hesitation.

I've also noticed a couple of times that as I'm slowing down (for example at a roundabout), the revs will suddenly drop to idle (just over 500rpm), and sit there for a few seconds before stalling. When this happens and the revs are at idle, it completely ignores my use of the accelerator pedal even if I floor it.

Any ideas?

Hello

My S40 T4 1999 also does the same. I ahve done some investigation into it but have not come to a satisfying resolve. At the moment it all points to the ECU. Although i don't know if it is due to remaps and other bits I have done.

But just turning it off before it stalls and then restarting the car seems to work..

Have you tried cleaning/replacing the MAF or idle air control valve?

Seems a common thing on other forums, but TBH I don't think either of those would stop it responding to the throttle completely...
