I'm going to France next month and will be using my TomTom 720 which shows speed camera locations. I have heard different views that this may be illegal under French law. Has anyone had experience of this with the French Police and can advise me of the definative rules on Sat Navs with fixed location speed cameras. I have a Road Angel but this will definately be left at home. Any advice will be appreciated.

Travelled in France many a time with GPS based camera detector and never had a problem. To the best of my knowledge, what is illegal is a radar detector, and they can get quite upset about those if you have one in the car, even if it's not switched on.

No problem with a Tom Tom which features cameras as, effectively, a POI. What is illegal in France are scanners such as Road Angel etc. Even if you take the box out of the car, but leave the antenna in, they will fine you and confiscate the device, with no right to argue the toss!
To be fair, all fixed cameras in France are signposted with very large signs prior to them. However, they are quite keen on hidden patrol officers with speed guns and seemingly abandoned innocuous cars in lay-bys with cameras in them, teamed with motorcycle police that pull you over further up the road.
However, 130km/h (80mph) is a more sensible motorway speed in the first place, compared to our draconian 70mph, introduced in a time when people in Morris Minors were getting a bit out of shape trying to vmax the Preston bypass!!

In the Le Mans section you will see comments on Speeding in France, I have a Becker and downloaded the International, Mobile & Traffic light speedcam POI from POI Plaza all free and they were all in the correct locations including 2 mobile units, just take care of your speed 130Kph and when/if raining drop to 110Kph, also if you have been above the limit note that they can check your time at the peage(tolls) and calculate your average speeds there and clobber you with a fine as many have Jean Darme close by................other than that..............enjoy your hols

Thanks for all of your advice,I will certainly be observing all speed limits. We will be travelling mainly on the Autoroutes and have been warned about timed tickets at the peages. Travelling mainly at night so hopefully the police will be tucked up in their beds. From Calais going via Rouen, Le Mans, Tours, Poitier and south into the Charente region. Also hoping to go to the Le Mans Classic while we are there, anyone had any experience of driving into Le Mans during the race weekend?

Le Mans is busy at the race weekends, from this years experience, go in to Antares park and ride and use the Tram..........search google for SETRAM and see it on the 'net. This will take you into the centre of Le Mans with ease and a day ticket is €3.60 if I remember right.
Your route is a good 'un and the A28 is a good road, beware south of Rouen as lack of Services namely fuel.....
