Suggestion : how about allowing people to have avatars (i.e. images that appear under/next to their nickname when posting) ?

I always think that sites with those look really tacky - just my personal opinion.

Not a fan myself. I've dished out a few to people on here such as racing drivers or manufacturers/specialists but it's not something I'd like all over the shop.

I don't want to criticise anything here, but feel like just posting an idea which might help us all

Not sure how old this topic is, but I feel it would help everyone know who everyone is if we had small avatars to the side of people's posts, because you so easily associate any picture or colour with a person.

To be honest I often feel lost on pistonheads, because we have little identity - Some people know who 'Dazren' or 'carzee' are, but to me and perhaps many, they're just names which are hard to remember amongst all the others, and I never know if I've chatted to them or never seen them before.

Check out my very simple avatar on mercedesshop.com www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=90939 - I've had that for 3 years, and think many people can recognize my posts and me from it, much easier than remembering a name. (The sig helps too, but let's ignore that for now!)

In the replies to that post, I don't have a clue who 'Glen' is, but from his avatar and signature layour I remember he's the guy with OZ wheels on a silver U.S. 190E-16v, who I've chatted to about his accident repairs once.

I currently don't think I can make a link between a single person on pistonheads and any particular car or conversation.. (ok maybe petrolted) after a year or so.

Oh and plus it encourages our creativity .

Single line text only signatures are a good reminder of people & their cars too!

Here's hoping!

I see your point and I'll give it some thought. Perhaps display avatars would become optional depending on the reader (with the default being off) [also have to bear in mind that a lot of people read PH in the office and it doesn't look good full of cartoons!]

However I am very unlikely to let the GS get filled up with posts that include signatures like this:

The Grand National is a great straight line car. The brakes are really bad But the car looks good. You can find them regularly for sale at Hemmings. At one time, I thought about getting one, but to modify the brakes would just cost too much.

I don't mean to cause offence here, but it's all that cp at the bottom of every post in lesser car forums which makes me glad Ted doesn't do avatars and sigs.

Your profile is for all of that stuff, if you really feel the need to tell everyone the minute details of your cars. The profile system on PH is excellent - detailed running costs, neatly laid out, a history of all your cars, pictures, links, the works!

Please Ted, keep the forums tidy!

IMO I hate avatars and signatures. They just take up space, make the forum more annoying to read with soo much extra stuff to look at, and it would slow down the servers.

Though if someone really wanted to be an arse/have a sig they could always add their signature as in teds example to every post.

so in conclusion, no avatars and sigs.

Forget the Avatars.

I keep the Computers forum open at work so it looks like a work related forum but with pics of a pair of bouncing breasts, it would seriously affect my PH time.

And nobody wants that do they?

Not in the middle of an open plan office.

In the privacy of your own home is a totally different question

Blimey, just the mention of the word breasts and you're here!

FWIW I'm not keen on the whole signatures/avatar thing. Without wishing to insult anyone it seems a bit adolescent to me, almost like an online version of Top Trumps.

You can always have a preferences option to turn them off if you're at work/whatever.

Also usually you have your avatar pic stored elsewhere, not on pistonheads, so negligable difference to the server speed.

Fair enough though.. I do like them because I'm used to them and prefer the "luxury" (it's like electric windows and a heater - you never missed them till you had them )

Hmm, not much support for this I fear !
I'll keep trying..

P.S. I still don't know who any of you guys are??!?

sorry Russ....I dont like em either!! The worst have to be gaming sites where people put their favourite jokes in their signature - some of them are half a sodding page long, and then they post into a single conversation about 10 times. drives me up the wall!

I'll definitely vote for breasts if that's still an option though?!!
