Whats best? and am I right to assume the latest 40gig PS3 is not backwards compatible to ps1/2 games

Correct.
But why buiy it for backwards compatability? Youve a new machine and will be buying new games You will still have the old console to use if you still want to.

Selling it or trading it in would get you maybe a half a crate of beer - not worth doing in other words.

ALL Ps3's are BC with PS1 games, thats done in software.

The 40gigs arnt BC wth PS2 games.

Theres a toomb raider on the 360 dunno how good it is, typicaly the 360 has a bigger and better games library for now, the PS3 has some decent games now too, it struggled for a bit.
