330d sport v focus rs?
Discussion
I currently own a 330d sport 51 plate. Its the 184bhp version but ive had it remapped to approx 225bhp. Its a fantastic car, silver, black leather lots of extras etc. However, ive just bought my gf a renault scenic as a family car. We have a 2 yr old duaghter and another on the way. I bought the bmw as a family car around 9 month ago and its great.
I no longer need the extra doors as we have the scenic so im thinking og getting a smaller car and liked the rs for ages.
How do you guys compare the 2 overall?

Well new the 330d Sport would have been £32k plus options, Focus say an ST-2 is £17.5k.I no longer need the extra doors as we have the scenic so im thinking og getting a smaller car and liked the rs for ages.

The focus is a competitor to the 1 series the 3 series to the Mondy.
Rwd v FWD no competition.
Fuel usage.... Focus ST gulp not good, opps its an RS your after well not as bad.
You will have to drive the engine far harder to keep ahead of the 330d Sport in the RS and that constant harder driving may not appeal.
Cabin.... its not that nice vs 3er.

I'd keep the 3-series or get something that's actually nicer.
If you didn't own either, I'd rather buy the RS, however agree with the above. If family duties are no longer a priority, why not go for something a bit more interesting with "occasional" seating in the rear. How about a nice 964 Carrera
I dont need a family car as such, but dont want a 2 seater as from time to time i will need stuff in the back. Its just the RS that interested me as i;ve always wanted one and maybe the time is right now. I suppose im best to go and see one in the flesh and test drive it to see how it compares.

I would say it's not even a fair comparison - if you want creature comforts and good pace and economy stick with your 330d. If you want what some people think of as the ultimate hot-hatch of it's generation, along with tricky diff a bit of exclusivity, then go for the Focus.Firstly they are two very different cars. The BMW is more of a refined everyday car, more of a motorway cruiser, and the RS is a B-road blaster and has a relatively harsh ride and the front diff can make it 'interesting' to drive, but its not as bad as all the press made it out to be. The RS will be quite a bit quicker and not so good on the fuel compared to the BMW, but it has minimal depreciation so it will pay off. I just sold mine and I used it everyday for 2 years, it was a great car and I really enjoyed it, but the only way your really going to tell which car is for you is by driving them both.

It's hard to find an RS that hasn't been modified and/or maltreated. You'll pay big money for one that is in good nick and is unmodified.
If you don't need a family car, why not consider something like a 350Z or S2000?

looking at hundreds on PH and autotrader that are cheap, unmodified and in great condition
remember that Ford made a loss on every one they sold.. they are a 25 grand motor
just be sure to test drive a few because the intrusiveness of teh diff varies enourmously from car to car
