Confused the hell out of me first time I drove one, no idea why it's there mind.

I asked the question back in '06 at one of the Q7 launch events and was told it's because the car is aimed primarily at the American market.

I agree that it's pants like a Merc, and I don't understand why they didn't just go with the one in the A6/A8 at the time (which is now in the A4 and A5 too).
