they are both lookn gveyr goog valuje right about noe with some A8s dipping under £16k for a 50k milage , and the VWs under £14k....hmm...if the audi badge worth that extra £3k or so...
Like both of 'em. Would probably go for the VW just 'cos they're that bit rarer................and everyone thinks they are Passats. Neighbour has a 3.0 TDi A8 and loves it to bits, (along with the, apparently, £16k worth of extras on it).Yep, could live with either.
I know the Phaeton is well screwed together and makes a great used buy...
I feel the Audi is worth at least the £3k extra...
Even if just to get quattro but certainly to get the image and quality.
A 3.0TDi quattro Sport with 19" alloys looks much nicer than the VW.
50k milers are retailing at £20000 or thereabouts but you're right sub £20000 will buy lesser spec (SE non Sport) models on smaller rims.

Remember that the A8 is also considerably lighter, still nigh on 2 tons, but probably a useful few hundred kilos lighter than the Phaeton. Dr G said:

apart from the wheels, what are the differences in the A8 sports and the SEs?
Wheels, seats, steering wheel, gear knob, standard trim, standard kit and suspension.I've got a PDF of the brochure if you'd like it?
Just bought a 2005 A8 3.0tdi, 36k miles with lots of goodies (Bose, Xenons, 18" 5 spoke wheels, DVD satnav, TV et etc) £22k. A brilliant car that seems like it's fresh off the showroom floor. The evident quality is such that it will be going strong and looking great in ten years time (like my other car - a pre-Bangle 1999 BMW 740i). The 3.0tdi engine combines lots of poke at the sort of speed you'll be doing in a car like this, with fuel economy pretty close to the advertised 33mpg combined cycle. The ride with the 18" wheels is excellent. I've heard that it degrades substantially with 19" and larger. The Bose stereo is awesome.
