fuel problems dutton
Discussion
Help, Just bought a Pheaton S1, lovely car but i'm having a problem, after i have been driving for about fifteen mins the car seems to start to starve of fuel, it missfires shudders and evenually stops compleatly i've plenty of fuel and i've just changed the filter in case it was glogged up but the problem persists. can anyone help, please keep the jargon and novice/idiot level please.
It could quite simply be a matter of the fuel pump not delivering enough fuel for the carbs... I've known similar symptoms when the fuel supply can't quite keep up, so whilst the car starts and runs just fine, the fuel level in the float chambers is gradually reducing to the point where after 10-15 minutes running the mixture leans out and the engine stops.
What carbs do you have, what state of tune is the engine in,what fuel pump set-up (mechanical or electric) and do you have a fuel pressure regulator fitted?

I've had twin 40's on the Quantum and a failing Facet gave exactly the results you're describing

My old dutton sierra suffered similar problems with the crossflow engine. It was sucking a lump of tank liner into the end of the pipe, ended up with a new tank from beevers auto panels.
If you are running a twin choke webber there is also a little filter in the pointed end of the carb where the fuel pipe goes in, inside the chamber under the big brass nut.
Other possible items to break down could be the condenser or coil.
Whats the setup? pinto or crossflow? single choke carb, twinchoke carb or multiple carbs? manual or electrical fuel pump?
Have you tried asking the previous owner if he has any ideas?
or you could ask on here

I had a similar problem on my Westfield and we checked everything. In the end there was a rubber pipe taking fuel from the tank into the metal pipe running the length of the car, this rubber tube had bent in half so couldn't suck enough fuel into the carbs, it was litterally a couple of quid and an inch of pipe that sorted the problem.
sucess, the new coil solved the prob, it runs like a dream i'm having new pedals made to give me more leg room and then i'm looking forward to many days happy driving that is of course once i've figured out how to reattach the gear stick that came out in my hand after taking the car out last night, it appears a pin has snapped. back to the drawing board.
