118d 'M-sport' or 130i M Sport

why not compromise and get the 120d...supposedly much better than the 118d but presumably still much cheaper than the 130i as a company car

Have got a 130i which was bought to replace a 911. So far it's been an excellent choice, quick enough to be great fun, nice noise and reasonable mpg (average 26ish, 32-35 on a m-way run and mine isn't the new ED one).

I looked at the 120d as an option and as mine was a private not company purchase the price of big engined petrol cars make them very attractive. I couldn't have bought a similar spec 120d M-Sport for the same money - a low spec SE or older/leggy M-Sport in the diesel was an option but as we've already got a diesel car too I didn't see the need to have both in the current climate. Time may prove me wrong.....

Personally, if you've got another performance car then don't get the 130i as it's good enough to substitute occasionally - the diesel and money saved could be the better option for you.

ETA: The M-Sport suspension is fine, the RF tyres are crap. The newer RFTs however are getting good reports so I guess the tyre comanies are catching oon and developing them better. If you don't like a firm sporty ride then the SE is still a very good car.

What about a 123d? Not much slower in the real world than the 130i and much kinder tax.

The 130i is a great car though, and the engine sounds great (tho coming from a Tuscan, most things will sound a bit disapponting!)

Cannot believe you didnt price out the 123d... thats 204bhp & 400Nm 6.7 to 60 no lag and 56mpg....

Re reading this then as you currently have a Leon Cupra TDI 150 (or do you have the 130tdi?) then the 118d is going to be no different in performance & your happy with that, the 118d is a cracking car.


I have read somewhere that BMW are intending to have a 116d using the Mini 1.6tdi and are trying to get that one under the magic 100g/km

Good decision I reckon. I have to run a jack-of-all-trades car, but if I had the space for a fun car like your TVR, I'd run the cheapest weasel I could get away with Mon-Fri, knowing I could throw money at enjoying my weekender.

You could also get a stealthy remap done on the 118d which gives generally another 27hp and 60Nm of torque - not far off the new 120d.

I have a 120d M Sport and am delighted with it - they are great cars.

Although, when handed the keys to a 118d M-Sport courtesy car at the local dealers, the service manager said 'Sorry, you've got the bone shaker today'

Nice car, and astonishingly economical, but for the sake of your spine, get the runflats changed for something with a little give in the sidewalls.
