So those of you who have started up your own businesses, do any of you wish you hadn't bothered? What do you wish you had done differently if anything?

Looking back, I'd have set up in Canada.

Other than that, its ace.

Challenging and more varied than you would have ever thought but ace, on the whole.

Did you guys work for a company for a bit, to get experience and contacts, then branch out? Or did you leap into a new field with a bit of research etc.

No holiday for 7 years, 24/7 callout, staff hassles, late payers, red tape, ever increasing tax burdens and dis-incentives. Love it. Will never work for anyone else.

Hmm that's something I would really like to know; I'm racking my brains whether to start up in a new sector doing something I've done my research on or whether to apply for a relevant position in the industry and build up a bit of experience...

Only thing is I might feel like i've missed the boat/set myself back rather than jumping in/lining someone elses pockets/get too comfortable with a good salary then feel trapped if have kids, bigger mortgage etc

Thanks for the replies so far thumbup

If you have something that you believe you can make a success of, just do it.

What is really the very worst that can happen?

I love my job I'm in now, but desperately desperately have similar issues - I soooo wish I had the right idea to put in to place so I could go out on my own frown

Why does a business have to be based on a fresh idea?

Find a market that requires an extra player or force your way into an existing market on price/service.

Where there's muck there's brass...
