right then, i have a 1.6 litre VW golf GL,

now, i wanted to paint a section of the engine just to tart it up a little bit. (dont comment on the painting etc as thats not what im after)

now, initially the section i painted i assumed was some sort of cover for the spark plugs as i couldnt see them anywhere.

so i think 'i'll take it off to paint it, it will be much easier' anyways i take it off and there are no spark plugs, instead there are 4 ..... holes?? i guess would be the best way of explaining it. kinda like an exhaust manifold, and towards the front are 4 little silver flaps.

now i knew instantly they were not the sparkplugs, and realised some form of sealant was around the edge of what i had removed. so i ad a look, saw this sealent stuff (kind of the consistence of grease from what i could see) was still wet, so i stuck it back on and just painted it on the engine.

now, here is a picture of the engine and as you can see the black rectangular thing is what has been painted.

can somebody please identify what this item is and what is underneath it, and do i need to apply a new sealant to it or is it ok ??

help much appreciated

thom.

also where are the spark plugs in a 1.6 GL (its an R reg if that helps)

heres the engine

Painting it? laugh

It's probably the coilpack/ignition coils. Spark plugs are going to be under there.

Just looks like part of the inlet manifold.

No coilpacks on it with it having a distributor.

Follow the ignition leads from the distributor to find the spark plugs.

Plugs are under the front part of the inlet manifold.
