Opinions required please.

I currently have a stainless exhaust that looks just like the one on TVR Parts website but the baffles now rattle and the long middle section has been welded and is not lining up properly so I need to replace the exhaust from the cats back.

I want to keep the cats as this seems to help achieve the required noise level for track days and gives a more relaxed long journey noise level.

There is a big difference between the cost of some of the systems offered.

The Silverstone Performance one is over £1000 and a direct replacement for mine is £365 with the ACT one in the middle.

Are there any others I should consider?

Does anybody have experience of more than one of the above systems?

Might not be of any help, but I do have a spare pair of stainless steel centre sections.

I've got the ACT system. Sounds fantastic and looks to be an OK piece of kit. I'm getting 112 Db at 3k RPM (tested at Nurburgring)

I would say that the SP system does look like it fits better though, particularly under the rear bumper.

Storer,

ACT do bullet silencers which can be used in place of the cats. I'd say these would be good option to look at. You might be able to save your current cats, rather than replacing them (not cheap) and you ought to keep the volume at a similar level to what you currently have. I'm going for these, plus a cat back big bore system, the aim is to get a system that's quieter when cruising at constant throttle, but just as loud when I boot it. Hope to fit it on the weekend, so can let you know how it goes if you're interested.

Steve.

Check that you have the correct cats fitted, as this caused a problem on my car. The rear section on my exhaust broke and I ordered a new section from here, about £90, but when I came to fit it, I found the cats were different lengths as I had a 4.5 and a 4.2 fitted and therefore a 1.5 inch difference. I cured this by getting a 4.5 cat from fleabay. Once I took the old exhaust off I found that mine had been welded and hacked to accommodate the 1.5 inch offset.

Ive got the ACT 'Big Bore' system avec 3" trackday silecers. Deeper bark then the old 2.5" sports system I had on before. I agree that the SP system does look like a quality bit of kit.

However, before making a decission, phone Tim @ ACT as speaking to him recently he has two new systems in development. IIRC one is a system with bolt on/bolt off tailpieces, a quiet one for tracking and a loud one for road use. Choose what you want for the day, couple of bolts and hey presto smile

The other system is a 'valved' system, but thats in early stages of development.

Funny, Im now secretly hoping my zorst breaks so I have an excuse to buy a new one paperbag

I put an ACT system on.

ACTSJ10 Cerbera sports tails, 2.5" tails £275

However. I had 3" tails put on instead. (Didnt have the extra silences though). Sounds awesome. I'm NOT decatted though.

Get one made specific to your car. From the cats back you'll be looking at around £500-£800, you can then specify whatever dimensions you want and can almost guarantee a perfect fit. The quality should be top notch. Easiest thing to do is to ask them to copy the system on there but go for a slightly wider bore, and get the joins / hangers manufactured properly.

As above http://www.haywardandscott.com/ speak to Ian, 6 week lead time for build, based in Basildon AIR £700

Perhaps should have mentioned I had the old girl tested using professional equipment at 4500rpm and got a reading of 103.7db.

I want to keep it to about that level but would like to link the two pipes if possible and I think (you may know better) I will need to keep the cats to achieve that

Both mine are the same length 4.5 cats. The joining bracket on the middle section had broken and been re-welded incorrectly but the middle section and silencers are past their best and I fancy a new one.

You can buy Linked de-cats, so you dont need to keep the cats.

As mentioned by Steve_T I would take the cats out.

1. You will save the cats whcih aren't cheap and don't last long if your car is overfuelling.
2. It reduces heat buildup around the gearbox/bellhousing which IMO will give the parts and easier life. The reduction of heat in the transmission tunnel is noticeable even from inside the cabin.

I have the ACT big bore system, and on the advice of an ex TVR mechanic went for the non silenced Cat replacements, and the non silenced tails. When I ordered this system with Tim, he asked, 'Are you sure?' It is VERY loud, makes people jump when I start it, and passing old people or animals is 'interesting!' The ACT system is a quality piece of kit and in my opinion offers great value for money. I am extremely happy with it, but will be back to Tim soon for some Cat silencers!

Well, it's well documented but I'm not happy with my SP system and it's coming off to be replaced with another, which I'll report on later.

SP claim typically 98db for their full system, but it's only measured 98db on a 98 4.2 with cats fitted. Testing on my car against a sports rear and a standard box, with and without cats, the SP system is 7db quieter on the sports exhaust 4db quieter than the standard.

SP Claim it's a performance exhaust system. My car has been on and off rolling roads whilst I checked to see why it was apparently just my car, then again as tests against different systems. On my 4.2 it made slightly more difference removing the cats, and power gained was in the single figures. It may be different for 4.5 systems.

Fit - if you go for it - make sure it fits correctly in the first place and don't leave until it does. One of my tailpipes is 12mm out and constantly hits the bodywork and is starting to craze so I can't use the car. It's constantly banged since day one, and the current fit is after it's been at SP and apparently is within tolerence!

After 3 months of run around I've finally given up as I don't have a car I can use. There are better and much cheaper systems out there.

Someone had that at Brands trackday last year - it looked very interesting.

Maybe I'm getting old but although I like the sound she makes it can seem a bit too loud after an hour or so on a journey.

I know you can get linked de-cats but I was hoping to get linked pipes further back. Heat in the car is a bit of an issue but much better now I have the fan chip from Trackcar. Replacing the cats with small silencers would be a worthwhile move though.

I was out in her yesterday and, as usual, she (or was it the handsome chap insidebiggrin) was turning heads. I needed some directions and stopped and asked a young lad who promptly said "your car's so loud I can't hear you" quickly followed by "what is it, a V8?".

I live near a village and I don't want to piss of too many of the locals, many of whom are friends.

Yes I would be interested in your findings. Including the ease and quality of fit and finish.

I will fit the exhaust myself. Are you having it done by ACT or are you doing it yourself.

Storer,

Am going to Austec on Saturday to hopefully borrow a ramp and fit it. From speaking to Tim there is more adjustment available with this system, so fitting should be easier than before. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers,

Steve.
