Bit steep...or make the lead up yourself with TD,RD and DTR from memory..pin outs is somewhere on a PH thread
PS get a pc with an RS232C serial port or else your messing about with a USB serial converter

i bought a usb to serial thingy so I can use the software on a new laptop. I plugged it in quickly last night to try and get a connection but it kept saying serial lead not connected. I did not start the engine, but had the key on and immob off.

Is there any settings I need to tweek on the laptop? The adaptor thing came with a driver CD but vista seemed to find a driver and install that?

Usually have to use specific driver supplied with USB convertor

Not running, but the immobiliser needs to be off.

Possibly the same way as on XP i.e. via Control panel, system, hardware select com port go into advanced and change the number.

changed to COM1 and connects ok. I was not running the engine due to other bit's of the car in pieces, so just had the ignition on and the immobilisor off, it would connect and show the readings for up to 10 seconds then re-start the readings/logging a few times then the program would crash? Is that just because the engine was not running? This is on Vista.

Hi Neil, yes I have got an old laptop, windows 98 I think, just want it up and running on the new one, will give it another go this weekend with the engine actually running! cheers Whitey

Try the software on my Sagaris pages its been modified to stop shut down when logging off, which may help and includes oil pressure and bigger screen shots.
