FTA: Scrap Diesel Duty Rise Until 2011

'Tax regime' must be changed, say truckers

Diesel prices have sored
Diesel prices have sored
The Government has been told to scrap any rises in diesel duty until at least 2011. The Freight Transport Association has accused the UK Government of having an 'ultra-high tax regime', with diesel duty in the UK costing 50p per litre compared to the EU average of 25p a litre.

The association said that diesel prices have increased by almost 50% during the last twelve months putting many businesses at risk. If prices continue hauliers will not be able to move goods, said the FTA.

The association is now calling on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to scrap the proposed 2p per litre increase in diesel duty planned for October, together with similar increases planned for 2009 and 2010.  FTA Director of Policy, James Hookham, said he acknowledged that the Government cannot control the world price of oil but is calling for it to re-think its policy on diesel duty.

'In the present cost environment, the Chancellor would be daft to impose the 2p duty increase, or the other increases planned for April 2009 and April 2010,' he said. 'The Freight Transport Association and the whole of UK industry calls on the Government to recognise these massive problems.  To date, the Chancellor has done nothing to support industry apart from ‘postponing’ the 2p fuel duty increase from April until October this year. That is absolutely not good enough.  He must certainly take early action to reduce diesel duty for industry – but in the mean time he must immediately announce the scrapping of the present proposals for duty increases this year, next year and the year after.’

Whats 2p when the price varys by upto 10p from one petrol station to the next. They need to reduce the tax, not just cancel the proposal to add more tax

1. Freeze duty (or reduce it, then raise it again if the oil price drops)
2. 5% VAT
3. Scrap VED....its st.

But what do I know?

The price of fuel is a sham, If they just halved the taxs on both diesel and petrol itd be extremely affordable and hauliers like my auld fella wouldn be looking at early retirement! But they wont coz its 1 of the only things we cant do without and it makes them too much money so i just cant see it happenin!

The Government are going bankrupt so need every penny they can get. What's the easiest target?

I expect the 2p increase to still go ahead.

They are still spending more then they are making (War, EU, Immigration, NHS computer, Gordon Brown smile classes, just to name a few) which means they do need every penny they can get.

You know when the country is in trouble when the party running it cant even stay out of debt!

We need external independent bodies to audit how money is spent. They need to employ tight-fisted gits like me. I've always wondered if personal debt should be taken into account before employing anyone in a position of power. If you can't manage your own finances...

Where is the Hanging truck icon the FTA used to use. It has a truck hanging in a noose made from a petrol pump hose. It's such a powerful image and is still as relevant to our issues today as it was previously. Lets bring it back for all involved!

Captain Darling and this boss are simply not listening, they know they are getting their P45's next election and can look forward to some cushy bank job somewhere.
Every government's the same, first term- try to "fix" all the last lot did, second term- possibly do something constructive, third term (if they get this far)- get complacent, arrogant and bogged down in dodgy dealing and sleaze.
Possibly a new law is needed to curtail their time in office, only problem is it would have to go through..... parliament.

That's not quite right. When labour took over from the torys the economy was ain great shape. That's why they have managed to stay for so long. In the first term they did sod all apart from remove lots of civil liberties, and screw up peoples pensions.

Unfortunately there is no quick solution as to what to do now, as Labour have pissed up our money against the wall... If the Torys get in (and who would bet against it?) they'll be in a damn hard position, tbh

In the US, tax on fuel varies from state to state, but it is a lot less than 1 dollar per gallon. We also don't have a VAT. I'm sorry that it's so high in the UK. Every dollar the government takes, is one less in your pocket.

I may be a bit dim but don't hauliers just claim for their fuel costs against tax, unless of course they don't want the taxman knowing how much they're buying hence how much work they're doing.

You are being dimwink (but i'm sure are not dim generally) They can only claim VAT on the Fuel Duty back, they can't claim the fuel duty itself

As for Petrol users not driving goods around the country, that may well be the case, but I do drive goods to and from my clients in my Petrol Car (which I obviously also use for non-business purposes)

They are so committed to squandering all our money on chav family units ( sprog, single 16 yr old mother and blisfully cooing 30 yr old night clubbing granny with plenty of benefit money to subscribe to Sky Tv and get mullered on Lambrinni and fags every weekend), immigrants who cant be deported and sue us for infringing their human rights, not to mention dishonest disabled benefit claimants (7.2 million who cant work !!!), in addition to piling every government department in the land chock full of penpushers and jobsworths, that you must be mad to think they would or could reduce the revenue generated for the cash cow motorist.
These are core labour voters , and therefore they get all our money, so theres none left for really worthwhile or deserving causes - so not a chance.
To sum up... Darling and Brown in a battle of wits would be defenseless.
Apologies if I left any parasites out of the rant list..
