Hi folks,

As you may know, I have a slight engine problem at the moment. I'm posting this to see if anyone is free to lend a pair of hands and help me get the engine out of the car this weekend (Telford). It's not a job I want to attempt alone.

I already have the fluids out, the inlet / dizzy off etc and the driveshafts and electricals disconnected. But I recall having a **** of a time getting the gearbox and clutch on - I suspect it will be easier but still a handful doing it in reverse.

Having sold my purpose designed winch (a week before the breakdown, what bad timing !) I could also do with borrowing an engine winch / hoist if anyone has one for hire etc.

Lastly, am not sure whether the air con compressor can simply be disconnected with the plate bolting it to the side of the engine or if the air con pipes need disconnecting (which would mean a refill and possibly some nasty fluid everywhere). Any ideas ?

With ongoing divorce and house up for sale, I need to get the car fixed to sell it, so all help very much appreciated. NB I am sure Ultima could do this in a matter of minutes so if all else fails I will ship the car over to them.

Many thanks,

Tony.

Would be more than happy to help but Portsmouth to Telford is not terribly practical.
I can handle forum questions if that will help.

Engine out is easy with a hoist it's the 'box that causes problems as you can't get a hoist on it and it needs to roll to one side as you pull it out. You can do it on your own but is easier with two. Find yourself some 6mm studding 8" long to screw into the end of the clutch shaft to withdraw it. Makes it easier to put back as well.

Leave the pipes fitted to the compressor or you will release nasties and pollute my world. Just remove it from the bracket or remove the whole bracket.

Thanks Steve,

The clutch shaft and 6mm studding; is this to remove the "pin" (like a small barbell with weights) that holds the clutch fork in place ? I remember that being a mare to get in - lining it up was tricky. I know this needs to come out before the gearbox will come loose. Do you simply screw the 6mm bolt it in and pull ? Sorry to sound thick, but the manual doesn't cover dismantling !

Cheers !

I will give you a hand mate, i currently have dave's engine hoist, if he doesnt mind i will bring it along??

Could you do a weekday ie Thur as im going to watch my engine be mapped on Saturday and im hoping to start refitting my engine Sat pm or Sun am?

Let me know

ps air con pump can simply be removed from the block by the 5 bolts and suspended out of the way, it is so easy mate. I have taken mine in and out 6 times in as many months so im getting quite quick at it.

You can use a bolt but a long piece of studding is better as it is easier to handle.

Yep.
May be an idea to order new needle rollers and seals from the factory to.

Many many thanks to everyone who called, posted and offered help. The engine is now out !

Special thanks to Kyle Rushall & Ashley (a.k.a. "the 999 crew") who turned up with all the right kit and make the job a lot easier than I thought. Thanks also to CanAm Dave for his support and the loan of the winch.

Just goes to show what a nice bunch of people Ultima owners are ! thumbup

Cheers everyone,

Tony.
