Boot solenoid dead

Does anyone know how to get at the f*&!ing boot solenoid??? 
I have checked all the usual suspects....the fuse is fine , the badge switch is switching and the catch is working manually. So I'm assuming that just leaves the solenoid which without being a contortionist seems almost impossible to get to??? Has anyone had to do this? Any tricks I can use?

Hi,
Mine failed the other day. I went through the motions - checking the switch was closing ok, checking condition and voltages through the various connectors etc. Contorted my hand up inside the bodywork to give the solenoid a prod and it started working again. I sprayed a little WD40 in there and cycled the latch for a minute and it seems to have been good as gold since.
Sorry not much help - I was lucky, I wouldn't want to have to get close access to the solenoid assembly...

Don't know how far you've got on your investigations so:
Once you get the boot open the solenoid is to the left of the boot catch (as you look in) between the inner and outer skins.
You will see a round (4-5" in diameter) plastic disk in the boot (one of a pair), remove it.
You will then have to peal back the boot carpet from the top down past this hole, until you see 2 bolt heads. The carpet sticks back with contact adhesive fairly easily.
These 2 bols hold in the boot solenoid. Hold onto it through the round hole as you undo the last of the thread, and the solenoid can be withdrawn back out the round hole.
In the long run it’s easier to take it out, sort it/get a new one and then put it back. And yes I have tried cutting corners……

Thanks guys for all the help! After much buggering around and swearing I've finally worked it out! The switch and solenoid were both fine and I ended up tracing all the wiring back to the fuse block under the steering column! Turned out it was a dodgy connection of one of the supply wires leaving the connector block on the back of the fuse box! Which explains why it worked when I slammed my door in frustration on a number of occasions!
