H-plate Audi Coupe 2.3 10v
Discussion
Hi folks, just bought a Coupe as a cheap run about/track day motor. I don't know huge amounts about them, but willing to learn.
Can you give me a few pointers as to what must be done to keep the car running along happily. Its had a recent radiator, brakes overhaul and a few other bits and bobs, just needs a spit and polish to bring the body up to scratch, lots of paint oxidisation. The only issue with it is that there's been a cold start bodge that I'll have to investigate, it looks like a sensor has been by-passes with an internal switch, almost like an electric manual choke. Any thoughts?
Also, QRSport are based in the village where I live so I'll probably pop in there and have a chat, are there any other specialists you can recommend?
Regards
Iain

That is a lovely engine you have yourself there, they sound lovely.
Just make sure you keep up to date with servicing and give the car regular oil changes for both the engine and the gearbox. Both of my coupes get regular oil changes and every other oil change I get the gearbox oil changed but more so with the S2 over the 8 valver.
A regular 'mechanical' problem with these coupes can be that the revs are sticking abit or the car runs very rough on idle. You will find that this will either be a Lambda probe (which would need replacing), the Maf (which would need cleaning with IPA fuel) or a sticky Idle Stabilisation Valve - ISV (which can be cleaned with abit of WD40 to clear all the gunk out).
Other than that all you will need to do is keep on eye on the rear lights of the car as sometimes these are prone to leaking which will eventually short out the electrics.
A good indication that the boot is leaking would be to take out the spare wheel and have a good feel around the well and if it's dry the chances are that you won't have an issue with a leaking tailgate.
Enjoy it!

Cheers, looking about 10w40 semi seems to be the engine oil of choice, what about the gearbox? Also you mention the exhaust, I think it's solid for now despite looking a bit ropey. Are there any brands that bring out the 5cyl beat but without being overpoweringly loud? I might swap that over if I decide to keep the car longterm, but would like to do 98db trackdays without any fuss!

Your best bet is to jump on here chap www.s2forum.com
Altho not an S2, most things answered or covered already tho. Exhaust wise they're an older car now so its prob a bespoke build (i had a 3" turbo back made for my S2) altho there are the odd Miltek or Supersprint hanging about if you look v hard!

Buying a OE exhaust won't be cheap which is why alot of coupes have aftermarket exhausts. I have a scorpion exhaust on mine and it sounds nice by all accounts.
I think I'll get somebody to record me doing a few test runs with it but for the record your 2.3 10v would sound nicer higher up in the rev range.
Edit - Darren beat me to it!

most covered above,
The coupes have some fairly issues which apply to all the models, the rear lights actually leak from the top seals, 3M and Audi still supply the sealing compound, you can destruct the entire boot to replace them. i did this with my previous cars, a long job but worth while. it never shorted the electrics just lead to water getting in the light and boot which is more of an annoyance.
Headlights are woefully dull, the reflector types dont respond to HIDs well, changing out for later ellipsoids suits better.
Front suspension gets a hammering, top mounts particularly prone.
Fuel lines are also mild steel and tend to go, often replaced for plastic or microbore. They run the full underside of the car and easier to spot.
Cold start is an issue with the 10v seen a few recent cases of that.
These also run a serpentine belt so make sure all the ancillary devices are also replaced at the same time or are working 100%
Other biggy is the brake bomb (pressure acculutor) give you the (!) from time to time. they are notorious for failing and one weak link in the system.
Dont know how much you can save weight wise from the coupe as it isnt a light car by nature, but backseats tyres and such should kill some weight, and bulkhead insulation to release some of that noise! Are you running FWD i assume?
I know a 10v running TSR heads, big valves, fast road cams and a full breathing transplant and its running about 175bhp. I would also try www.audifans.net a lot of that era, s2forum is well more suited to S2's! there is a lot of tweaked 20 & 10v's there, many cross between both sites tbh.
resources:
www.20v.org ok slightly different but many apply to your car.
http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_articles/buyers.htm much of the pointers there apply for all the coupes.
