Great day out in the sunshine..

Spent most of the day trying to push myself and shoot at a slower shutter speed than I normally would... and ended up junking most of my shots.. hey ho.. biggrin

5 was 1/80th

4 was 1/320

2 and 6 were 1/500th

Thanks biggrin

Basically I hold the camera as if it were a rifle (although I hold the end of the lens, not the middle) and swivel at the hips to track the car..

Piers, looks to me like the Druids shots are taken from the professional snappers pitch on the track side - how are you getting press accreditation for this? Or are you a friend of a friend??

I wish biggrin

Assuming you mean the 2 head on shots.. I was sat down to take them to get the lower angle.. the lens was set to its longest minimum focus and I was shooting wide open to narrow the DoF to miss the fence.

As for how to get accreditation.. Someone like Luca, Jenx or Autofocus will be better placed to answer.. but I think depending on what race/ series your shooting, you need a letter from your editor, and possibily may have to submit recent published work?

The JPS Lotus looking back down to Paddock from Druids is a cracking example of the classic Brands hatch shot.

It's a shame the "good" Dr P saw fit to install Jurasic Park style fences up there as when the sun is in the wrong spot it buggers that angle up totally, but not in this case.
The sideways Lotus 'Tina is nice too...shame it ended up on its side in a gravel trap further round the GP loop.

As for shutter speeds just stick with 1/320 - 1/400th for head on & 3/4 shots then you can save the silly slow shutter stuff for pans.

Here there...
Yes it was a brilliant day for racing and sunshine! Haven't taken much motorsport snapping in a while (too busy with weddings normally) but here are a few of my attempts. Was a great day for it.

Piers - do you have a 400mm L 5.6? I saw a guy standing there taking lots of images with that lens. If it was you then you are responsible for me receiving my own 400mm L 5.6 today biggrin

Hope you enjoy. Think I have over processed a couple of them - I like to use the high pass filter sometimes for sharpening but not sure I have over cooked this time?

What I like about the above shot is that if you look at the driver his eyes are fixed on the nose of the white Cortina

This guy did this every time on every corner - just his driving style. Not quick but certainly entertaining!

Lovely Chevron B21

My favourite - a Lola T296 mmm

Thought I'd try something different by shooting through the trees - very hit and miss!

Smoke spelt retirement for this 911 sadly

Cheers

Some lovely pictures here.

Quick question - was that 6 wheel Tyrell actually any good?

MH.. late afternoon with the sun directly behind caused problems with the fence showing in photos..

SS.. Nice shots.. the Lotus through the trees is excellent. I assume you used manual focus?
And yes I do have the 400 f5.6.. although there was another guy I saw with one also.. I was the one with a single body and rucksack.. he was using 2 bodies..

If it was me.. sorry for the expense smile But its a lovely lens...

Hi Piers,

Thanks and yes it was manual focus. Took a few more but the panning wasn't quite up to scratch.
Thought it must have been you. I did see that other guy and asked him how he got on with the lens too. I'm looking forward to taking it to the Classic Le Mans next week.

cheers
