Visiting FOS for the first time this year. Already have a Canon 75-300 mm IS lens. Am thinking of getting a 100-400 IS L lens.

How much better is the quality with the L series lenses, and will I benefit from the extra zoom (I am planning a safari later in the year, so will use it there too)?

What is the max aperture of these lenses at full zoom? e.g. if the 75-300 is f/2.8 across the range, then adding to that with a 1.4x teleconverter would be preferable to a 100-400 L with only f/5.6 at 400mm (i.e. you will end up with the same result for less ££)

I went from the 70-300 IS to the 100-400L IS about three years ago and havent looked back since...Its one of the lenses I will never sell.

Check my website which you can link to through my profile. Virtually all the aircraft, car and wildlife shots were taken with this lens as well as some of the train ones.

Yes quality is better with L series glass, it will focus faster and has better build quality. I also prefer the push/pull zoom action, makes zooming in and out that much faster. Some people dont like it bit thats down to personal preferences

The trade off is the extra weight and size although i have no problem with this whatsoever. I used mine at the FOS for the last couple of years and its the perfect lens to use.

If you can afford one then without a doubt buy one!!

I doubt you'll benefit much from the extra zoom at the FoS because you're so close to the action there but it's almost unique in that regard - every other track you are likely to go to it will most probably be very useful. I agree with what others have said about L series lenses, once you've bought one you won't go back (well, except maybe a 10-22mm EFS wide angle which isn't L but is excellent and maybe a 1.8 50mm which is also excellent and cheap as chips).

Last time I was at Goodwood FOS I had my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. I wouldn't say I needed anything longer as everywhere is pretty close to the track with no fences...etc.

I would say having a faster lens is beneficial as the rally stage can be quite gloomy.

^^^What 350wedge said^^^

I'd rather use my nuts as brake pads than sell my 100-400.

I plan on taking two 400D's, one with a 28-70 2.8 Sigma DG and the other with a 70-200 2.8 L IS USM.

I think the action is close enough not to bother taking my 1.4II and hopefully having two cameras means I won't have to change lenses and if the weather is dry introduce some of LM's finest ste and dust into the body and onto the sensor!

I would like a 100-400 as I think it's a great lens but for the two or three times a year I'd use it it's an expensive toy.

Looks like the weather for the event is 22 degrees and fair so no quagmire like last year (famous last words!!)

At the FoS you'll need a multi-purpose lens. 28-135, 17-85, something like that.

I had a 28-135IS on my camera the whole time, and never needed anything longer than maybe 200mm, so the 135 was just fine. And in the paddock the kit 18-55 ( redface ) had to come out on occasion.

I used my 70-300 for the track stuff stuff, and never struggled for length or speed tbh.

What days you going Martin ?

Me and the Bro are down Fri and Sat if you want to meet up..

Mines will be making the trip on the Friday.

Used and abused - a cracking lens.

I'm not sure about the 100-400mm at Goodwood. If you get a good spot you might find 100mm too long. These were taken with a 10D and 28-135mm.

Been there, seen it and nearly bought the lens last night!

I'm pretty sure I'll have one, but the 70-200 will do the job just fine for the moment wink

Hi Mark,

I'm not going this year (thought I'd give it a break) - i'm doing the S'stone Classic instead. Will be back again next year though I'd imagine...

How's tricks, anyway? And how are you finding the 'teg?

I always take my 100-400 along . . . . . then leave it in the bag, preferring to use a 70-200. Most of these were between 80-140mm :-

I can only think of two spots where 400mm might be useful - looking down the starting straight from outside the first corner and from inside the left hander looking towards the bridge. So really, I don't think you'll benifit much from the extra zoom. That said, I'll still be taking a 400mm with me!
