Aluminium XJ6.....
Discussion
I have a 350xjr and the simple answer is no
the 350xj is lighter then the s type hence better mileage, they are designed to run for long distances and are absolutely at their best on the motorway when they are just effortless
the only real expense is one of the suspension bushes which at the moment you have to replace the whole arm for as jaguar don;t sell the bush to push in and no one else makes them, but this is common to the s stype
main dealer servicing is about £300 a year and for everything else use an independent, i can recommend tom at tlc jags
go to jag lovers and look up the original brochures and decide what spec you'd want, i'd suggest you get one with the sat nav as the screen then controls everything else
i know the s type is nice, but when mine went for a service they lent ma year old s-type and it all just felt cheap after the xj

Oooo ! below the belt.
Only kidding, I felt the same when I drove an X type courtesy car.
As much as I like the S type I`d have an XJ if my garage was big enough.
sorry i didn't mean to be rude, i expected a lot more of bits to be identical but was surprised how different they were, it's probably the kind of thing you notice going one way and not the other
the other weird thing is the s type looked big but felt small, where as the xj looks small and yet feels big, but that may just be due to my lardy arse

Hmmm, S-Type owner and lover here! I guess I can sympathise with those of you who have an XJ and get an S-Type courtesy car, because I get the same feeling when I get given an X-Type (sorry X-Type owners!) In truth, the different Jags deliver different experiences in my view. I want a mid sized saloon that delivers quality performance ( I have a 4.2 V8 SE) and my motor does just what I want. I suppose that if I got an XJ for a few days I'd feel lost inside it...no intimacy!
Re Piquet's latest post, several of my first time passengers have been surprised by the internal space being good. Maybe it looks modest outside but good in practice. Mind you, the boot is crap!

I had an XJR 350 which has been followed by a 3.0 S Type Sport.
I have been impressed by the S Type which I did expect to find disappointing after the XJR. It is a bit smaller on the inside and certainly in the boot, obviously less effortlessly powerful and agile, but I have to say in terms of quality feels damn near equal. The fact that it has absolutely all the toys helps. Its different, and just about as enjoyable to drive. It has a manual gearbox, and I get a lot of fun extracting the performance.
I'm sure a 4.2 or an R would be even better.
I'm prepared to be corrected but I do not think that you will find a better high performance saloon on the market just now than a well chosen used Jag.
