I get all mine from Halfrauds, always have done. They do Mobil 5/50w in a silver 5ltr thingy.
My local Halfords in SW Ldn only had their own brand 5w/50 not Mobil. Is cheaper but am a little worried about quality!oil ,well different people have differnt ideas , some people look at this engine as a very old, over fifty .so i find useing vr1 20/50 is a good oil but some people think the top end needs lubicating quickly so they go for a synthetic 10 or 15 oil .ive found after trying different oils that the 20/50 makes the engine quiet but not sure about the circulation from cold . i now use a morris 10/50 which givws me the best of both worlds , nice and thin from cold and thick enough when the engine is hot .
I use (old spec) Vauxhall Super Synthetic 5W40 which comes in 20 and 205 litre drums from your local GM dealer. They have now changed the spec to 5W30 so when my private stock runs out I will switch to the semi-synthetic version 10W40. It would be interesting to find out who makes this oil for GM.

It made by Fuchs
i had to stop using the fully syn stuff for the same reason(i buy in bulk)and currently use 15/50 Mobil 1 Motorsport in the Chim not in the workshop
my customers would hit the roof with the price of that stuff

I suppose I do waste money on oil. The point of synthetic oils is that they are designed to last longer before degrading so that service intervals can be extended. Even so, I change the oil in all my cars every six months whatever happens and I only do 3K a year max in the Chim.
On the other hand if you have ever rebuilt an engine which was heavily neglected in the lube department you will appreciate the need for frequent oil changes as the number one measure of preventative maintenance.
In my youth I did this on an ex-rep hack Ford Cortina which was only 4 years old with 40K on the clock. Every bearing surface was shot including the cam, cam followers, oil pump, timing chain & gears, crank and pistons/bores. It took half a day to scrape the sump clean of crap. The only original items NOT replaced were the rocker arms and shaft. The previous driver had never changed the oil, just kept it topped up on a regular basis. Non-PC readers will already have worked out which part of the British Isles he came from...

Not sure if you guys will find this help full but if Halfrauds do a 5w 50 synth oil so will your local partco/unipart motor factors as the partco/unipart chain has a deal with halfrauds to supply them with all the consumables and the bulk of their service/repair parts. Being a true motor factors partco/unipart should be quite a bit cheaper than halfords...in theory at least
