Hi All

Does anybody know if it's possible to cut the end off the standard exhaust backbox and reweld a baffle that has come loose on the RH side as it's now rattling badly and a real nuisance. Just thought I'd read on here a while back that someone had done this. I like the decat + standard backbox combination both sound and looks wise so would like to stick with it.

Regards
Simon

Should be possible. I have heard stories of all sorts of cut'n'shut jobs done to the standard exhausts. They are generally poor quality and after several repairs most seem to throw in the towel and buy an aftermarket exhaust.

Just make sure the repair is cost effective as you will probably have to do more in the future (unless you don't do many miles).

Before you start on a bodge, why not have a word with Tim at ACT and see how much a replacement would cost?

I don't understand the "baffle" bit (am I baffled??). Seriously, the pipe that takes exhaust gas into your back box bends and becomes a perforated tube which then becomes a solid pipe which bends and exits rearwards. The perforated tube is surrounded by steel wool and glass wadding to absorb sound. There is a plate that separates the left and right sides of the back box. Nothing should rattle. Stopping rattles is easy. You cut open a window into the box, reweld, repack and weld together. If the perforated tube is very poor, you can buy new tube from Demon Tweaks. One cause of rattles is if the pipe that exits as a tail pipe is cracked from the box casing. It's all simple welding and quick to do. Box needs to be taken off the car and welds can be painted with heat-resistant silver (well aluminium actually) paint. Replace padding too. For track use you will register only 100 dB and not be shown the circuit door for being too loud.
