hopping mad....what would you do?
Discussion
Have been running a section website for a nation wide car club (unpaid work, just for the love of it) for the past 5 years now. They did pay for the web space though. Head office have their own DULL web site, our section has had nearly 10,000 hits worldwide. It is bright modern and very popular. A head office committee has now decided that we should be careful what pictures we put on the site, (we currently have approx 3000 pictures of events) we will be censored in other words. Today we are informed that the main web site will be taking over soon, but wont tell us when. Smacks of jealousy to us. We want to pull the plug now. What would you do?

start your own, take your content, and pull the plug the current one now, it will cost but then they have no say on content, style etc.
Is that right? great, as 98% of the photo's are mine. When I have asked for input for pictures page in the past, e.g. if I couldn't make it to a particular rally to take photo's, they have sent as few as possible. s have been said, if it's your content, just buy a hosting package, upload the data, and grab a domain name that wont get you in legal trouble (ie no copyright / trademarked names) but that your members will be able to relate to.
Then, once you've set it up, let your members know about the new site, and why.
Check my profile if you need any hosting help.

Thanks everyone.
I have closed (as good as damn it!) the section website. Someone else can take it off my hands, I no longer want the petty small mindedness backbiting that was connected with the site. I am ffrrreeee.....to start my own car fun loving picture filled website. I will let you know when I'm up and running, shouldn't be long, a day or two. Thanks again for your helpful and wise advise. I knew I could rely on you.

Interesting. I was a member of a car club whose main membership consisted of old people with pre-internet ideas of what a car club should be.
When one of the members set up a stunningly effective forum, it encouraged huge input from members and non-members alike but the old boys club didn't like that and regularly sought to downgrade the forum. In the end they decided that to protect themselves from litigation arising from comments placed on their forum, they went members only.
Of course, the fact that EVERY OTHER forum is open to everyone and that no-one gets prosecuted if you have effective moderation sailed past their closed ears. They had been advised by their friendly solicitor and that was that..!!
And the fact that their once vibrant forum is now dull dull dull because it has lost the valuable technical input from loads and loads of non-members hasn't dented their pride. There is definitely a feeling that they have recaptured their asset from interlopers.
There's only one thing you can do when this happens... get out. I did. Many others did. We found other virtual homes.

Quite right Mars, they didn't take too kindly to our forum. It was the picture content that offended. The fact that we had about 2.5 thousand pics on our site and they only had a few, that rearly got up their nose. If only they too had put the work in, then we would have had a fantastic pictorial database.

And do you now have it all for your own site?Send me a mail if you want a hand with anything website related

What's the link of your new site then? We'd all like a look
Yeah - come on Oil - it's been 12 hours now .... is it finished and live yet?

But in all seriousness though - you've done exactly the right thing. I'd post as many references to your new site as you can, on your 'old' website - so all existing visitors know where you are.
Good luck with it - and I look forward to seeing it
