I have just recently bought a 1999 chimaera 400. Best example could find for the money!am looking to put alloys on it but wanted to know the offset and a place where i could get good wheels for a good price! so if anyone got any suggestions let me know. also was thinking of getting straight through pipes done. does this sound better than the normal rumble of the v8. thanx for any answers guys

Hello mate welcome to the fold.
I am no good with the wheel offsets as I have zero idea with those things.

As for the straight thru pipes; there are loads of people who have had it done and love the noise! Obviously needs the cat replacing for testing but good fun the rest of the time i would imagine!

I'm sure some of the knowledgeable ones will be along shortly.
Have fun and be safe matey!

Hi and welcome to the TVR fold.

Just letting you know that to have a straight through exhaust is nothing to do with the cats so no need to have to replace anything for the m.o.t.....but yes get it done as it sounds awesome. thumbup

HI and welcome
Dont know about the wheels but have had the exhaust mod and it sounds really good, but last week i removed the pre-cats and it now sounds much deeper espescially under load withlots off pops and crackles would recommend.

Do not fit big alloys to the car. TVR designed the Chimaera to run on 16" rims. It's already a harsh enough ride without fitting low profile jobbies. Really - you will regret it and you could adversely affect the handling - which is already lairy enough.

I would also get used to the exhaust before deciding if you want a "sports" exhaust. It's already fking loud. In fact it's so loud it's hard to get on a track day - if you fit a sports system there is absolutely no chance.

Loud as standard??? Are you mad? When a couple pulled into the Chim Roar the other weekend, I couldn't believe the engine was running as they were that quiet..! Best get a proper exhaust on it, you'll be wanting a full decat ACT manifold system with replacement cherrybomb exhaust - makes it sound like a NASCAR! Awesome thumbup

Hi Nick....did you get home OK after Roar? Was it a faulty oil pressure sender?

Hi mate!byebye Yeah got under it at the next station and the pressure switch was all loose and knackered. I've left it at home and taken the daily hack to norfolk but I'll change the oil and switch when I'm next home and do a couple of other jobs I've been meaning to get done... I'm going to have to get some stickers for my car though... Love the look of yours!

Hi Glyn...Yes am from kent, but went to TVR centre off junction 23 on M25. Nice lads there. They said don't get the car de-catted as it will cause problems when M.O.T, and also not to get cherry bomb exhaust as too loud. They did say get the straight through pipes done sounds great at a special price for me at 200 + vat. So am def getting that done soon, but wanted to hear one first as it does sound good the way it is.

Hi Don...thanx for info but seriously would 17" effect that much to the ride. I mean it handles good now with original 15" at front and 16" rear. Quite alot of peeps have had 17"s and even 18"s on them. Do you know what the offset is on tvr chimaera?really do like the RH zw1 17s in that photo on PAU1 pic. Is yours standard?are u talking from experiance about handling?

I have 17" on the front and 18" on the rear Toyo tyres the car looks better and has not upset the handling I prefer it.

Think you have that a bit mixed up there... A cherry bomb exhaust is only a little louder than standard, it only makes the noise a bit deeper and more throaty. A straight through exhaust is very loud and IMHO sounds a bit hollow. My full decat with cherrybombs isn't as loud as straight through decat and after having it noise tested at brands, it came out as 107db. With a set of ACT's bolt on track silencers on the back, it is well within the noise limit of 90% of circuits around the UK and thats fine by me... With the track cans off, it's not boomy or annoying on the motorway as some can be, but when you open up you can hear it for a good mile away!

Of course its all up to you, but if you've been told to get straight through pipes as they are quieter than cherrybombs then I would do a little homework first. They may be referring to the Offords 'cherrybombs' which turned out to be straight through pipes - proper cherrybombs shouldn't be much louder than standard.

Edit: Decat MOT isn't a problem, you just need a friendly MOT tester biggrin
