European Speeding Fines
Discussion
AA website tells you everything! However, there are ALOT of bent rozzers out there so be aware that you may have to pay a cash fine for something you havn't considered!
7 drivers on the Cannonball last week were stopped in Catalonia, some of them were going rather fast too. Heaviest fine was only 800 euros for something that would get you a 12 month ban over here!
If you've got cash you should be ok!

There's a program on ITV at 8pm this evening (well in the Meridian area at least) which gives some cases of how Brits have fallen foul of some European driving laws, sometimes unwittingly. Apparently it details how some have faced massive fines or have even had their vehicles confiscated.
Could be interesting.

Doh! Missed it. Was it good?
Planning to travel through these countries, comment beside each one as I understand them:
- Germany - strict enforcement where limits apply, licence lost +40km/h+
- France - moderate enforcement, licence lost +30km/h+
- Luxembourg - ??
- Switzerland - very strict enforcement, licence lost +30km/h+, very hefty fines
- Italy - light enforcement, licence lost +40km/h+
- Austria - moderate enforcement, licence lost +40km/h+, small fines
- Belgium - moderate enforcement, licence lost +40km/h+
Sound right? Sounds like it's better to play in Italy and Austria, and take it sedately in Switzerland and France? With somewhere inbetween for the rest.
Norway 60km/h and below: Loss of license at +26km/h and above. Fine +5km/h £60 to +25km/h £650.
61 km/h and upwards: Loss of license at +36km/h. Fine +5km/h £60 to +30km/h £780.
Papers have reportet fines as high as £1300 for "tourist speeding", I suppose that's instead of taking the license. As a foreigner you must pay at site by card before you are allowed to continue.
Be aware of the non-uniformed video cars.

think you are being a bit paranoid to be honest. saw maybe two cops in Germany on Tuesday when we came up from Salzburg but there was so much traffic that you could barely speed anyway. saw maybe 1 cop in France and he was in the other lane.Planning to travel through these countries, comment beside each one as I understand them:

the only time to be careful in France with speeding is on the way to Calais on a Saturday or Sunday evening, and then theres a speed trap every 300 yards or so.
italian cops really don't patrol the autostradas much, much like the austrians. the swiss are only about on motorways occasionally, and tend to camp in towns rather than passes, although very occasionally they are on a road in the middle of nowhere but I've never seen a trap on a pass.
never seen a sprout cop, although considering Belgium is just one giant traffic jam they aren't really needed.
You're right. 2k miles and no issues.

Special thanks to the Z3 in front of me entering a tunnel in Switzerland that set off the forward facing Gatso. I'd missed that one, but had enough time to brake after the flashes.
Germany was interesting too. Regularly hit 140+, but also was stuck in traffic the worst there too.
Some amusing observation about nationalities on autobahns:
- NL - like the fast lane and dislike rear view mirrors. If they don't look, you're not really there.
- F - like rear view mirrors and wait until they can't see you before they pull out (i.e. just as you reach their blind spot)
- I - believe that their immaculate haircut will save them from going through the pearly gates backwards in flames and so drive accordingly
- D - leap out of your way as though you're infected with bubonic plague
- B - are like nitrogen, generally you won't notice them. Strangely if you're in a jam they seem to be all around.
