Hi All,

Hope this info might be of use to anyone bringing back a ute as a personal import.

I have now moved back to Blighty and collected my HSV Maloo from Southampton last Friday, having shipped it from New Zealand (RO-RO Is cheapest but longer). I had a lot of varying information on getting it on the road via an SVA (Single vehicle authority). I originally thought the hoop jumping would include things like fitting a fog lamp, pay for the speedo to be re-calibrated/repaced, etc. etc. I even had a quote for about 900 quid to do all the work (From those nice HSV people - Thanks.). However, the most useful help came actually from a technician at one of the SVA testing stations and from the Vosa website. The information was an absolute revelation:

1. The Ute is classed as a light commercial vehicle and because of this:
2. The lights are not the subject of an examination so no fog light needed.
3. The speedometer is not examined or tested.
4. The tyres are not checked.
5. The doors latches and hinges are not checked
6. There is no requirement for testing protective steering ( I presume collapsible steering column)
7. Anti theft devices not required/checked.
8. Rear view mirror not required/checked.
9. Seat belts, installation or their anchorages not required/checked!!!
10.Glass, windscreens and glass, test not required. (Although I was advised there would be a problem with darkened or heavily tinted screens)
11.Wiper and washers system not checked.
12.CO2 and fuel consumption figures not required.
13.No requirement for front or side impact protection.
14. Design weights not required.
15. Interior fittings not checked.
16. SEATS AND THEIR ANCHORAGES NOT CHECKED!!!

AND the test fee is, until next Monday, only £63. In addition I can drive it to the station on NZ plates providing I have 3rd party insurance in place. BTW I have had a quote from A-Plan for fully comp at £795 per annum with full no claims etc.( My own insurers-RSA were not interested except for 3rd party!!!)

From what I have gleaned what will be tested is:

Brakes, noise and silencers (Note to me to re-install originals!!) basic emission test (but not the most severe), fuel input, general vehicle construction, radio suppression. Oh, and obviously all your paperwork must be in order, i.e customs Cert' SVA 1 application form etc.

Well it all sounds simple enough but the bad news is that the paperwork and testing process will take another 3-4 weeks so all I can do is admire her curves as she sits on the drive for now!

Hope this may be of help to someone and even those who are giving advice. Cheers.

BTW my brother reckons I need to loose the MALOO decals (My Loo??) but I told him Maloo is Aboriginal for Storm.

As a personal import I didn't pay anything. I lived in New Zealand for over 12 months and so it was all for free. Thanks Gordon!!!

BTW, whatever you paid, your ute was worth it!!!

In light of your posts it is worth pointing out that as you were importing a vehicle already owned by you which qualifies you for no duty or tax also means that your vehicle is only subject to "simple" SVA, not the "enhanced" SVA the rest of us would need to deal with if we were to do it. This certainly isn't quite so easy!

Thanks for that. I suppose my good fortune with the lack of duties makes up for coming back here, eh?

Hi Jon,

No its a 2005 VZ Auto (hate that awful 6 speed box), LS2 6.0l, in Quicksilver, which I much prefer to the newer "VE" Model. I had a hard lid fitted and colour coded just before I flew back, so the boot is huge!!

I would be interested to know actually how many ute owners there are out there, hopefully enough to have a ute get together some time. Most owners on here have Monaro's and I feel somewhat in a minority on this site at the moment.

Re: the road tax, who cares? I don't mind paying the xtra for having something completely different. To hell with the petrol cost too! It's going to be a weekender anyway. BTW I have signed the tax petition anyway.
and in NZ, fully comp insurance cost me £254 and tax was aabout £50 ish.

Hope to catch up with you some time? Cheers - Gaz

If i remember rightly JAG R8 is joining the Monaros and VXR8s at santa pod on the 16th august. That might be a good time for the rest of the ute owners to meet up. I'd love to see them all.

Hope I'm through the SVA and on the road by then, in that case.

nice twin pipes! I notice there is a cut out for your arches in the liner...don't think mine has that - does that mean your arches are bigger than mine or just your liner is different???

I doubt it - I have flat feet!LOL No seriiously the cut out in the rear valance (between the pipes) is for the tow bar. I took it off ready for the SVA as I was advised a NZ towbar might not comply. Glad I did coz it weighed a ton. The wheel arches are standard, until I've tubbed it for wider rear wheels, that's after I've pulled the lump and box for a little upgradeyes

PS I don't have a liner fitted, didn't want any water getting underneath, just use a rubber mat if i use the boot.
