I have recently sold my Audi and bought myself a new BMW 3 Series M Sport, about a year ago I decided to have my Audi wetsanded to remove the orange peel the results we unbelievable. The person who done my Audi (Kelly at KDS) always says (and I total agree) the darker the colour the more reflective, glossy and wet it will look.
So first thing I did was when I ordered my car was to make sure it was in a special edition pearl black. It came to the big day of picking my new car up and I was shocked, the paint finish was absolutely terrible. I know my Audi had a better paint finish than when it was brand new, but the finish was really bad. You could see the orange peel from a distance. I told them at BMW I was not happy with the finish on my BRAND NEW car, all they could say was this is what all BMW’s are painted like and offered me free upgrades. I was not happy, I took the car after the free upgrades were added. While the car was still at BMW I called Kelly to once again book my car in for wedsanding to remove to terrible orange peel, so from picking it up it was at his unit within 4 days. It was there for about a week but it was worth it, the results were outstanding. Why have brand new cars got such bad paint finishes. See link below for before and after pictures of my car.

Even when I was picking up my Audi form KDS I did see a new 335i (about a year old) having the same done to that due to such bad paint finish.

I'm glad you posted this. The more publicity BMW get for the shocking state of the paint on their current cars the sooner they will fix it.

I doubt it very much, i doubt this forum or others have any bearing on BMW sales, agree it's good to highlight the issues though

Possibly not but it certainly can't make it any worse.

Very true. BMW have being fitting marginal brakes (to put it politely) to Mcars for years and a HUGE amount of complaining both on forums and in the press (who you could argue probably have more clout) about the subject doesn't seem to have had any effect on the situation and much as I loath the poor paint finish on current cars, I'd put decent brakes down as a tad more important!

Quite possibly, however, to your average punter, I'd guess that the paint is a tad more visible than the iffy brakes.

Well at least they are consistently bad - as the paint finish on the calipers is sh*te as well.

Very true - unless of course you're staring at zero run off area a few corners short of the bottom of you favourite mountain pass!

Before I took delivery of the car they added my free upgrade (£1600 worth of free walnut trim) and the also said I could have the BMW seal & protect package free but I would have to re-book that for a later date (which was good, it was only one week later). I told them it was going straight down to KDS be to wetsanded. The didn’t mention this would void the warranty, I also asked them as the paint was so bad would they pay for the paint correction to be done and they said ‘NO’. I asked Kelly at KDS just to wetsand and pre-cleanse the paint (ready for the free BMW seal & protect). The car was at Kelly’s for 5 days having the treatment done.

I took the car back to BMW, even they couldn’t believe how good the car looked now (but still no mention of this voiding the warranty). Now you won’t believe this but after they had applied this so call seal and protect, the car had swirl marks in the paintwork. I was absolutely fuming, I couldn’t be bothered to argue with them anymore, I just took the car and will never be going back to BMW again. Any work that needs to be done on the car will be carried out at KDS.

The colour is carbon black if you are interested, the cost of the wetsanding and paint pre-cleanse/clean was £500, but I have used him for a few years now and that was a discounted price. In my eyes this was money well spent. I will post pictures of the car during and after the paint correction shortly.

Hi all

I will try my best this weekend to compile a comprehensive price menu !
including different levels of wet sanding!

My website should double its size soon showing videos , pictures and text
explaning the different processes involved with paint and detailing, and prices (discounts for club members , and maintance packages)etc !!!!!

here is some pictures of a nissan navara that just been in for 2 weeks , having the most extreme wet flat possible, this inculded full interior and engine bay detail and multi stage layered wax !!!
The cost was £1000

biggrin

Ps will post thread soon about paint warranty answers

Cheers kelly

Had an excellent day yesterday at Goodwood, I went to the BMW stand and had a look at the new M3 convertible. It was in carbon black like mine and once again the paint finish was really bad, as this was their show car. Out of all the manufacturers there BMW's cars had the worst paint finish, even compared to less executive companies. I have posted a few pictures to show just how bad the paint finish was.

And then I saw another M3 in blue with a paint finish like this.

i'd go a bit further than that and say that is shocking on a circa £55k car from a prestige marque, the sister-in-laws '05 plate Focus has better paint than that.

Ha! I was just going to post a comment on exactly the same matter! I saw that at Goodwood too! It was also evident on the X6 if you looked a little more closely.

Extraordinary goings on at BMW!

Thank you Mat

As you can see from the results i absolutely love detailing!!!

Paul Dalton (miracle detail) contacted me by email 2 weeks ago and after many emails between each other He Quoted many times how good my work is and he is very impressed with me!!! Which coming from another top detailer is very flattering indeed...

Quote "We need to meet sounds like i have at last found another detailer on my level!!!smile" biggrinbiggrinbiggrin
