Reversing into an unlit car
Discussion
Just back from a walk with the missus and dog in Bledlow.
By the time we got back to the car it was dark. I reversed the car out slowly and then heard that horrible sound when you know you've gone into something, but i couldn't see what it was.
I swung the car round to see a car parked up on the verge/road with a nice new dent in the driver's door
I gave my details to the lady of the house (the car was her daughters) but i was wondering where do i stand on this. i.e. reversing into an unlit car on a country road with no lighting in near pitch darkness?
Do i have any legs to stand on here?

Her car's a company car so it'll probably be going through our insurance companies. I just don't like the idea of an at fault accident with 11 years of NCB - it'll put the insurance up.
if i was being a w*nker i would have just driven off as there were no witnesses. Would you have done the same outlaw?? (or just driven off?)

hey but man you done well 11 ncb
but now you had one
the car want moving man it was parked. and you backed into no one wants to use there ncb
but you can hardly say it was even the tinyest bit not your fault m8.
and as for leaving parking lighs on.
how often do you leave em on
or who want a flat bat in the morning if you did.
if you dont want to lose you ncb you should have handed them a handfull of cash to fix it
would i have drove off
i wouldend have i wouldent have hit in the first place

outlaw, i'm trying to find out whether an unlit car parked half on/off a near pitch dark road is even partially to blame.
I know it's mostly my fault, i was the one who did the reversing, no problem with that or the insurance. Just wanted to know how i stood - obviously with you, it's with a parrot

I don't think its a requirement to have your lights on when parked up although i recall it being in the HC (yonks since i read that
).
Your reversing lights are for both seeing and to be seen although some cars' are unusefully crap thats for sure....
Anyway would the car having its sidelights on have made any difference?? You said you backed into their door... Ain't no lights there!
Might just be a case of your fault IMO.
Also would you loose the full 11 years NCB?? I would have a word with insurance company...

4 bulbs X 21 watts / 12 volts = 7 amps - a servicable and charged battery should be easily able to deliver this over a period of 12 hours.
You may be interested to know that Which magazine this month goes into depth about car insurance. Apparently, if you have a healthy NCD and have an accident, even if it isn't protected, you will still only lose a percentage of your discount. Some insurers will only dock you 5% (Liverpool Victoria) others up to 25% (Abbey National). Worth checking it out.

1) Sidelights are not 21 watts, they are 5 watts.
2) Ignoring the incorrect current draw, very few modern car batteries would deliver 7 amps for 12 hours, that's a rated capacity of at least 84 Amp/hours. The chances of having enough charge left to start the eninge is remote to put it mildly.

,not sure. It's a country road that goes past a row of houses, church, pub and back to a country road again. however no signs for 30mph and no streetlights.
