Info regarding 1 series BMW

Hi all,am looking at buying a Diesel 1 series BMW,probably on 55 ish plate having covered 40k miles ish.

Are there any issues with these cars,what are they like to live with and what sort of work will need doing on any higher mileage models.

is there much difference between 118d and 120d?

I've got a 56 plate 120d SE with 30K on the clock. No problems at all. Changed all four tyres from Bridgestones to Michelins (great improvement) at 24K. Averaged 48MPG over the last 23K. Good fun, practical car. Have a 335d M Sport as well so under no illusions.

Ive tested the 5 door 123d SE and it was a really good car - a future purchase for me I highly predict.

Also a friend has on 06 reg 118d SE - and its totally std no options on it... however its still a fine car. He has had it from new (comp car) and nothing has gone wrong with it, now on 60-70k only just now into his third set i.e. changed tyres twice. Its the fronts which wear the most on his and he does hoon the roundabouts a fair bit the rear just seem to last & last.

Its quiet and unlike the VAG units as in its smooth and more revy not a sudden thrust of power all at once.

Boot is only 20ltrs less than the Golf so its not as small as people make out.

Ive been in that car with 5 adults many times in the front I have loads of room, in the rear its also fine I'm 6'2 BTW.

Other good thing is cam chain only... so no belts to change every 4 years unlike the VAG's.

For what its worth ive got a 57 plate 120 ED auto and its a cracking piece of kit with a tuning box its my little go kart for something so fast the mpg i think is amazing .On the M4 the other day for 10 miles i drove at 55-60 mph and the OBC showed 72mpg.

Hi welsh beef www.dieselpowertuning.co.uk its supposed to help mpg by about 7% so i thinks its just the way they are.On that drive , i reset OBC and for 10 miles at a constant 80mph got 47mpg, reset and for another 10 miles did 70mph and got 55mpg, it seems 55-60 is spot on for economy.Good luck

If your looking for a 55 reg, you might find my old car. I'd be interested how many owners its had since me and how dealers explained that the first keeper only had it 5 months.

Lots of trim issues with mine, so look closely at bits you might normally take for granted.
