I own a Taimar Turbo SE in very original road trim. I am thinking about turning it into a sprint / hill climb car as it has some history of being hill climbed in it's road trim state. It would be good to see it competing again.

Am I mad to be considering doing this to such a rare car ?

It's your car, if you want to do it, then do it.

To go sprinting/hillclimbing, the mods you 'need' to make are not difficult and all are reversable/removeable. You can always get a bolt in cage as well.

It's far better that these cars get used, rather than become garage queens

You dont need a cage yet. All you need for your Turbo road car is a second throttle return spring and a strut on the front - after that its parts to improve your speed like tyres, brakes and supension. I would advise a school of some description - Harewood is excellent.

If you are in the south then the Gurston Down school is good

From memory, the mods I initially made were:-

1) Timing Strut
2) Aluminium Panel between fuel tank and car interior (never checked by a scruitineer) - I made this myself in about a morning
3) Clear on/off marking on ignition key
4) Clear earth marking on battery -ve cable
5) Second throttle return spring

You need to check that your tyres are listed in the MSA book, buy yourself a suit, helment, gloves, boots and then you will ready to take to the hills.

Hi,

Hi

Mine has all the bits listed .... on my first outing I did have petrol coming back out the fuel tank filler on the last Gurston corner on the standard fuel tank and so upgraded it to a foam filled with non-return valve.

I would also check really carefully if you fit a full cage that the drivers side front cage leg doesn't get in the way of your leg - mine is a bit of a pain but I've got used to it.

Also the TVR Sprint Championship is the one to join as the team are really helpful and there is a novice class.

The nearside sidelight staying on is a top secret go faster mod :-)

Cheers

Chris

Graham,
What would give you more pleasure, a car used only on the roads or one that you can also compete with?
A point for consideration -although my brother raced motorcycles for several seasons, his worst accident(s) were on public roads.

What is this thing of which you write?

It's a device for cutting the timing beam at the start and finish of the sprint/hillclimb - often made from plastic or light aluminum. I've attached a shot of my Sag showing the item fastened to the front number plate.

You will see the same idea on Chris's car on the shot above.

Thanks for all the comments. I think these have just made my mind up. I will investigate further and hopefully prepare the car for racing.

If you're going racing decide on your championship first and build accordingly. A Taimar Turbo may not be eligible for very much outside TVRCC and even then you may find you are in a class for highly modified cars.

My suggestion is start with sprints in 'standard' trim and if you like it buy a car that someone else has already spent thousands on preparing for racing. Personally I think one should learn ones craft in a relatively slow car and then get a faster car. There are LOTS of drivers out there who started in fast cars and never learnt how to carry speed through a corner or push a car right to its limit lap after lap.

Sprints may not seem good value for money on a pound per minute basis but the overall cost is a fraction of what you would spend doing a full season's racing, even with a car that's ready to go.

One more thing.......you'll almost certainly become addicted, so I hope you have deep pockets

Best of luck whatever you choose

It would be great to have you racing, although I thik that a 3.0 turbo may be a class B car as its turbocharged ( thinking Pete reeve here) and with the Yellow Cerb and Cliffs 350 you would probably find yourself battling with me for points hoping the other guys make a mistake! I love racing in the TVR championship and its my first year. The other guys are brilliant and you gets lots of support. Im sure you would be made very welcome.

This thought had gone through my mind about the car's eligibility for racing. Does anyone know where I can check what it is eligible for and in what classes? Theoretically, can a 3.0 turbo be competitive in it's class? My dilema here is that I will never sell the car but really want to see it fully active.

Christina Totty ran one in the first race this series at cadwell and was very competitive. I will see if I can find the times for you but I know she was competitive in what I believe was class C. contact John Reid via http://www.readmanracing.co.uk/race_dates.php for the series regs.

also have a look at the dunlop tuscan challenge sector in gassing.

I can second that - first hand Ownen!

Great week-end and nice to meet you and the other folk. Some very clever and inovative folk in the paddock area, most willing to help out if your in trouble.

Graham,
Your car would compete in Class B in the Tuscan Challenge. Unless you spent vast fortunes, it would not be competitive. After spending these vast fortunes, it would be very difficult to drive quickly.

If you were to go the route of any the historic series, you may come across problems with eledgibility regarding the bodywork modifications you run and the series attitude towards post manufacture modification. It may or may not be a problem, but you should find out first.

Hi Keith

Hope youre well. Just a quick note. I know this may have been in jest, but im not sure how serious both you and Tim were about looking at Marcs Griffith. The reason I ask is that I am very happy with it and have agreed to do a deal with Tony at Silverstone to buy it and run it next year. However at the back of my mind I also fancy a Tuscan although really I should stick to the griff as its probably more suited to my abilities.

The point being if you guys are interested I would be happy for you to speak to him directly before I commit, then if you do decide to go for it then it forces my hand on the Tuscan.

If the timings not right for you for whatever reason and your going to focus on running the Taz then I will crack on and do the deal with Tony. I just didnt want to commit to it and then find that you guys would also have liked to buy it, as I would be quite happy to look at either the Griff or a Tuscan for next year.

Best Wishes

Owen
