saxo coughing and spluttering
Discussion
Hi My step daughter has a W reg Saxo 1.1l. Recently it started to exhibit odd symptoms after it had been run till empty (by the idiot boyfriend). It would rev upto 2k revs and then drop for no reason. It will cut out and or chug along or kangaroo. She was told it was probably a coil problem and has bought a new one and had it fitted. I reckon its crud in the fuel system, and advised her to fit an inline fuel filter. Is there anything else it could be and that she might need to do. Cheers

It's crud in the fuel - basically, with the tank being so low, all the sediment that was in the tank is now in the fuel filter (the car has one, no need to fit another)
Why do people say that? Where do you think the fuel is normally taken from? The top of the tank?Fuel is always taken from the lowest point so there's no difference in the 'crud' levels.

The fuel is NOT taken from the absolute bottom of the tank. It's taken from a point about an inch above it. Under certain conditions, namely hard cornering on a nearly empty tank, fuel slosh means these dirt particles get picked up and sucked up. Straight into the filter. I know, I sorted enough of them in my day - I was around the garage scene when the Mrk 1 Golf and it's comedy disintigrating fuel filler pipe was a common car. It used to stop those dead in their tracks.
my car saxo 1.1 1997,, seems to have same problem,, when driving it will start splutterin nd try dyin on me then every time i pull up to a junction im havin to press accel softly to keep it alive or else itll just bla bla bla and cuut out would that be fuel filter also or something else,,, i havent a car head on me so im clueless really

In answer to the OP's problem, are the coils on the 1.1 seperate? If so unplug them one at a time. If unplugging one of them doesn't make a difference then you know you're cuprit.
Fuel filter on the Sax is down in the sill, it's easy to replace using the Haynes manual or a google search should come up with it. Should cost you the best part of a tenner for the filter. I doubt it's this but I guess it's worth changing.
Otherwise, check the spark plugs (do this while checking the coils) as they've been known to fail, same symptoms on my GTI-6 were caused by a dead sparkplug (FPSH, 100k miles, still on original plugs...)
