Anyones C5 Use Oil?
Discussion
My 02 has used about 1 litre in every 5000 miles but after about 20,000 miles the consumption is less than before. Some of the 2001s had problems with their piston rings which caused consumption of about 1 litre per 500 miles. Quite a large proportion of them had their rings replaced under warranty. Of those that didn't want ring replacement most have found that oil consumption has settled back down to more normal figures past 15-25,000 miles. I'd say just keep an eye on yours and if consumption gets worse then have it looked at.
Hi all,
My C5 is using a bit of oil (3500 miles and is down to min).... From the above posts it seems ok for a top-up, so I am trying to track down the 5w-30. I have mailed Eurovettes so hopefully there should be a reply. Is there anyone else who can get 5w-30?
Also since this is only a top-up i assume you can't mix grades and it needs to be 5w-30 and also Mobil 1?
Thanks all

I was told by the dealer to expect my Z06 to use about a litre every 6000 miles, which it did to begin with but then it got better and doesn't seem to use oil now. Perhaps it's just bedding in that lets a bit of oil leak around rings etc... alternatively it could be because it's much colder here than Texas!

In the 6 years I've had my C5 it's never needed any top-up between routine oil changes. Which reminds me it's due for a change right now. 8 litres of Mobil 1 (0W-40) and a new filter (PF44) sitting waiting for it to warm up a bit outside. Once I get the "old" oil out of the Vette it's ready to go straight into another vehicle; I reckon used Mobil 1 is a much better lubricant than new cheap oil. It's a dodge (no not a Dodge) I've been using 20 years without a hitch.
Oil consumption issues are common with the LS1 engine and always have been. Some use it, some don't. The conclusion most people have drawn is that it rather depends on how you drive it. Much of the consumption issue arises because of the PCV system which gets a bit keen and draws oil out which is then burnt. There was an in-line modification designed to make it a little less voracious.
However, I believe it is more to do with your style of driving. Letting off the throttle will suck oil up the bores so letting off the throttle in stop-start traffic will tend to use more oil. If, like me, you're always letting off the throttle as people are in your way, you'll use more. Suffice to say, just check your oil and get used to your consumption and fill accordingly.
The 2001 ring problem was largely confined to (or maybe amplified by)the 385bhp Z06 LS6 and it was the consumption issues on that model that led to re-ringing and a redesign of the rings for the 02 model year.
From the various forums, it's clear that the oil use isn't a problem. There is also a guy who analyses his oil and basically he tested his Mobil 1 (German spec - yup those Americans have even gone that far...)and found that even after 5000 miles use, the oil was still in prime condition with very few contaminants or metal particles.
I tend to use Mobil 1 Rally which is a bit thicker having a 5w30 grade and available from most branches of Halfords. Mine never used to use much but I did need an interchange top-up last year.

I filled up the Sierra with the waste oil I took out of the Z06. The oil was black, but hey it's a Sierra!
Nige,of course you know this kind of practise will affect your sierra's warranty.

it must sound like loose change in a wasing machine
Sounded like that before I put some oil in it! It was checked about a month ago and when I checked on Sunday there wasn't any on the dipstick
So some old synthetic was better than no mineral....
It sounds more like a tank than a washing machine but I think that is either the exhaust or possibly the manifold, will get around to fixing it if and when I get some time which at the moment is sometime never

, just expensive given the cost of Mobil 1
