Copied from GG.

Just a quickie. My girlfriend is looking for a new car. Budget about £3k (I've tried to play the MX5 card) and she's narrowed her search down to a Skoda Fabia 1.4, Toyota Yaris 1.0, or possible a Vauxhall Corsa. The Fabia seems to be winning the battle and following a little net trawling there doesn't seem to be too much to worry about other than them being dog slow. Going to have a second look at one on thursday night, where a deal might be struck but just wonderred if I should be looking out for anything specific?

Avoid any 1.4 16v with an engine number starting with the letter A. These are prone to piston ring issues. The "B" engines are less affected.

Any idea which years are affected? The one we look at was on an X-plate but there is a 52 reg in contention as well.

Most. Our 51 plate is affected, but have heard it on most ages. Look for excessive oil usage.

Wow, sounds like the MX 5 might be back on the cards.

As I posted at the time, i had an enjoyable run behind a diesl Fabia, and I thought it handled beautifully, and it didn't half go. I was in my Boxster and sat behind the fabia thoroughly enjoying watching how the car handled. Its driver was a good pedaller too.

Sorry to drag this backup. Can somebody confirm what engine is in a '1.4 MPi?' Am I right in saying that its a 1.4 8v with approx 60 bhp, same as MK4 Polo engine?

Correct. The more powerful 1.2 is a better bet than the 1.4MPi. As much power but more economical.

Cheers matey. Haven't seen any 1.2's under budget. Are the 1.4's ok or is there a reason to avoid?

Nothing particularly wrong with them, just an older engine so less efficient.
