1000 foot racing
Discussion
The first NHRA event run over 1000 foot for the Nitro Cars the Mile High nats seems to have been a great success with some very close racing. when the cars next race nearer sea level most cars will be running in the 3's at over 300 mph , could this be the end of 1320 foot racing for the Pro Cars in the USA ?

Not sure if this is the death of 1320 nitro racing in the states, it should be up to the racers to decide which direction to go.
Personally I would prefer to see the cars calmed down a little (the Dale Armstrong method) and return to the full quarter.
If the decision is to keep 1000 ft nitro racing it would probably be just a matter of time before the FIA take the same stance in Europe.

And it will solve the problem for maybe 6 months tops until the teams have worked out how to make the engine fall apart at 1001ft rather than 1321ftThe sustainable approach would be to calm the cars down otherwise in a few years time we'll be racing to 60 foot.

surely "calming down" only lasts a while, like nitro % reductions, etc
all the teams do is lean on the engines in other ways.
This is precisely what Dale Armstrong was trying to address: http://www.competitionplus.com/index.php?option=co...all the teams do is lean on the engines in other ways.
By limiting the static compression ratio and lowering the maximum blower overdrive he believes that engines would be more reliable, less stressed and therefore safer.

Hmmmm, wouldnt it be an interesting piece of trivia if Lex Joon turned out to be the last person to win a major 1/4 mile top fuel eliminator ever?
There will be 1/4 mile racing at hockenhiem and santa pod.Jon C said:
Oh, I am sure there will, just an idle thought that crossed my mind earlier
Not again, Jon! Take a handful of Ibuprofen and wash them down with half a bottle of Glen Morange and I guarantee those those idle thoughts will go away......Better make that the whole bottle, then!

as wikipedia puts it
A drag race pits two vehicles against each other over a straight, measured distance from a standing start. The standard distances are either a quarter-mile (1,320 feet/402.3 m) or an eighth-mile (660 feet/201 m). (As of July 2, 2008, the distance of top fuel and nitro funny car races has been shortened to 1,000 feet in NHRA races while race safety is evaluated. This is in the wake of the death of Scott Kalitta, on June 21 in Englishtown, N.J.) A standard drag racing event involves several classes, each competing in their own single-elimination tournament of head-to-head races.

t Sherlock! The NHRA have ONLY adopted 1000 ft to avoid more law suits as Kallita is threatening to sue them!
Mantorp have been looking for a way out of their short shut down area dilema for ages, as FB will not spend any money on extending the track, so they jumped on the opportunity PDQ
I suspect 1000 TF racing will be with us until the NHRA can be sure they will not get sued! which may be a long time!
