I'm getting a metallic rattle/vibration from what sounds like the exhaust at certain speeds amd on certain road conditions. It's very intermittent but generally happens at high speeds (M5 on Sunday night). the exhaust seems to be fairly solid on inspection. It's had the back box opened up and the perforated pipe replaced with a solid pipe, could the welds have come apart in side the rear box? anyone else had this issue. Help and adivce much appreciated from the Griff driving Ph collective!!

I'd check the easy stuff first, what condition are the bobbins and tail mount in?

There are three rubber mounts shaped like cotton reels that hold the exhaust to the mounting bracket in the centre of the car. There is also a rubber mount inside a bracket that you can see between the exhaust tips when viewed from the rear.

If they're perished or hardened they won't shield the exhaust from vibration. They're certainly easier to check than opening up the exhaust again yes

Previous owner had the box on mine opened up and sleeved. Last year it developed a rattle which became worse over time. I took it off thinking it was going to be the mounting rubbers but found it was in fact the pipes rattling about inside the box. My fix for this was to buy a standard one from the classifieds on here and stick that on. It would however be worth lifting the bonnet and following the pipe down the side of the engine. There is a bracket that bolts to the block. I have had this bolt go missing what also causes a lot of rattling.

I once had this problem which ended up being caused by the rear hanger being too tight. The result of this was the exhaust kept hitting a chassis cross member above the rear section. Cured by adding a couple of washers under each mounting bolt on the exhaust tray... May help you??
