currently looking for a new car. I'm going to be using the car as a track toy, was wondering if the rx7 is worth a look, iv heard servicing is a pain in the ass, but insurance is very cheap and they seem pretty cheap to buy. and why have so many had engine replacments??

thanks Elliot.

It's definitely worth a look - I doubt insurance is cheap - I think it used to be as companies hadn't twigged that although it's 'essentially' a 1.3 (or is that 2 x 1.3 I can't quite remember)it's got more power.

I looked at one several years back, servicing was no worse than any other jap sports car, they have stayed pretty even cost wise because once they get down to about 5/6K they retain that value, partially due to rarety and the engine replacement.

Engines should be replaced approximately every 60K due to tip wear. A compression test beforehand will tell you if it needs it sooner or later than 60k.

Insurance depends on modifications, your age and location (obviously), I pay £650 fully comp for a 450 bhp rex. Not bad but I'm 37!

Engine replacements... they turbo'd engine is generally good for 60k+ if maintained well. Many aren't/weren't. A cheap rex is likely to be cheap for a reason like any car.

Servicing - normal servicing is a doddle. Oil every 3k, plugs every 6k. Both jobs are easy to do with minimal ability. No nasty timing belts/chains to look after. Even the belts (if worn) are easy to do. Done my own breaks and it was simple as well.

As a track toy they're brilliant. Good breaking, great balance. A standardish twin turbo will be responsive in all corners, a big single will require more work to keep on boost.

Mine is 16 years old but I've replaced almost everything in the last 5 years - suspension bushing is the last major thing that needs doing.

Things to look out for on a track car would be a v-mounted intercooler/rad setup. Some front mount setups work but the V is the way to go.

Very good track car, and a small single turbo is very responsive on track, whilst giving good power. Sweet little engine to drive. Don't fit the overly harsh jap sepc track suspension, the spring rates are way too high. very nice balance, but not enough steering lock to catch very lurid slides unless you are super quick on the steering.
And best of all, they can do this: smile

Come to the next Nippon Challenge race at mallory park on August 25th and see a few racing, along with other Japanese cars.

Hey Tony - glad to see you doing so well in NC - do you guys make it down to Brands (my local track) for a round this year?

yes, there in November. The first two meetings I had some handling issues to sort out (lots of understeer due to the ARB installation - now sorted). It was working at pembrey. Car is still on .6 bar boost and just over 300bhp though. Will keep it like that whilst I get to grips with it.
Come along and say hello at Brands.
