Registration of an Ultima in Switzerland
Discussion
Hi everyone!
I'm a new one here, as I have only caught the Ultima disease over the last 10 days or so. I am a Porsche nut, raced a 964 RS and a 968 CS in the Swiss Porsche Championship several years ago, but I think that Ultimas are becoming an even more serious illness. I have trawled through the web and found several very well documented build sites.
Will be soon retiring and I thought that the build of an Ultima could be an excellent project to keep busy.....
Have checked with the factory to see if any Ultimas are road registered in this country. It seems not. Does anybody out there have any information and details concerning this. I will be checking with the local automobile registry authorities to sound them out. Home made planes are registered and authorized to fly here, so why not cars??
Thanks for any info.

Oooh yes!
I'm a long time lurker on the Ultima pages (also a Porsche freak like the OP). If anyone has any info on the likelihood of getting an Ultima (or two!) in Switzerland, I'd love to hear it! I thought about it a couple of months ago, but getting the car registered (I think) would be a huge problem. And don't even talk about emissions or noise testing!
I know that (currently), it's not possible to get an Ariel Atom into Switzerland, so I imagine an Ultima would fall into the same category.
There is a company here that makes Porsche 356 Speedster replicas (you know, like Chesil amongst others) so i wonder how they get around selling new cars with old engines/components. My german is not good enough to find this out. Might also be worth putting this question in the Switzerland and Kit cars forums...
So in summary, sorry I can't help, but I'm right with you on the idea!

Speak to Sven "SchimmS"
He has an LS powered Ultima in Germany that has been through TUV. I understand that he has been though emissions testing.

Thanks for the info. True, the emission testing would probably be a big issue to get an Ultima road regstered, but with injection and cats, should get some good readings in order to comply with regulations. Noise would also be an issue, but I imagine that could be got around without too much problems. If the TUV accepted, the Swiss authorities would probably accept also.
Will post later.

I suppose it depends on whether you are Swiss and how long you have been here. As an immigrant, I was able to bring my RS500 with me using the "declaration of household effects" form. The car is now immatriculated, insured and fully road legal on Swiss plates BUT is not compliant with a lot of the regular Swiss regs. For example, my car has no catalyser and I was able to keep the front splitter and rear wings, both of which are not normally legal in CH.
Here's the car with Ruedi Eggenberger of Eggenberger Motorsport. These are the guys that did all the work on my car to get it legal here. They are the same outfit that ran the works Texaco RS500's in the European and World Touring Car Championships in the late 1980's...

No, I'm Swiss and the family has been the same since 1306.... Havn't moved lately to Switzerland (that was back in 1975), so I can't claim an importation with "personal belongings" and special treatment. So I will continue poking the automotive registry people. Have started first contacts this morning, but due to holiday time I may have to wait some time to get a clear picture. First information points to a possible solution. The LS-7 engine option seems the best way to go so as to meet emission and noise regulations. The wing may have to go.

Ack. It's going to be a long slog for sure. The authorities here are very strict if my experience over the past 3-4 months is to be reckoned on but then you very likely know that already and a lot more tricks than I. All the 't's must be crossed and the 'i's dotted. If you don't mind the car being slightly bent you can mod it sufficiently to pass the tests, get the grey card and then put it all back again. Not sure the authorities or insurance companies are overly thrilled by this, but in my experience it goes on all the time (some of the boy racer cars round here CLEARLY could not pass an immatriculation / SAN test in a million years). That said, it'd take some mods to get an Ultima through (raised ride height, deleted spoiler, 2.0 TDI engine etc
Good luck, be interested to hear how you get on...

Well, yes I know the local authorities are very strict and I agree that some of the "boy racers" here are a sure to have non authorised cars (wheel carts?). I remember with my 964 RS and the periodic technical checks, with the low height and 12 cm for optimum circuit suspension setup, sports cat, cup muffler thu pipe, roll cage, fire extinguisher, safety harness, etc., the inspectors must have closed their eyes sometimes, but it always worked and the grey card was duly stamped for 2 more years. Way in the past (70's) I had an Alpine Renault A110 and that seemed to pass each time. The cars were always spotless and that probably also helped.
Anyway, after a long phone conversation with the people at "La Blecherette", they were rather positive to the idea, but also said that it could be a long process. First step for a September meeting with them, I promised to prepare a file on the Ultima car (technical data, general info, photos, etc.). On that basis they will say if its worth it to go further. Now I know what I'm going to do during my upcoming 3 weeks of holidays....!!!!

Hello,
We have the same registration problems in France. To avoid that an Ultima GTR has been bought by the brother in law who is english (nobody's perfect ). So the car kept english plates and is insured to be driven in France...

Good idea, but could be a no no and the source of certain problems should the local authorities find out. Indeed, the Swiss will want to see the car registered on locally. Also, in case of an accident, could have legal implications.
The photo you have on your profile, looks like a GTR on Bernie's Paul Ricard HTTT?? Nice!! The one on my profile was also taken at the same track, but before all the modifications...

Doesnt that mean it can only stay in France for 6 months? what about MOT VED ect?
The car can stay in France all the time. It's a special Insurance for expatriate... I care a lot for that problem and it's the only one I found...but really expensive (3500 dollars/year !!!).UltimaCH said:

The most difficult was to find an Insurance which accept both english plates and car in France all the time...
Yes the picture on my profile is "my" GTR on the High Technology Test Track- Paul Ricard. I am between a quarter and 15 mns () far from this track. Give a shout next time...
Hello All,
I would like to introduce myself as I am a newbie on this forum. I have been reading this thread with interest as I live near Nice on the Cote d’Azur, South France and am very interested in owning an Ultima GTR. I have been following this Ultima forum for some time, and went to the Factory Open Day last month to learn / find out more.
Fred, I was excited to read that you own an Ultima in France. I thought I could become the first one. Drop me an e-mail sometime.
As a Brit who is currently resident and working in France I spoke to one UK insurance company who had clients based in this part of the world, who was happy to provide insurance cover for an Ultima with UK plates based here. Having to return to the UK every six months is my only issue at the moment. I know of instances where many UK cars / drivers are flouting this rule which must mean they are in breach of their insurance contract obligations. Is there any legal way round this?
Daniel RB & UltimaCH I wish you luck with registering in Switzerland and will continue to follow this thread with interest.
James.

Hi James,
Yes there is an (expensive) legal way : Italsure, Insurance solutions for expatriate... That's the way choosen for "my brother in law's GTR".
