Sorry if there's been a thread on this already but after cruising through the Hatfield tunnel in 3rd with the roof off (on the A1) I feel the need to test the acoustics of other tunnels...

What's the best tunnel you've been in and in what car?

Bryn Glas near Newport or the tunnels to the infield parking at Donnington.

The tunnels on the A55 across the top of north Wales.

I think the best tunnels need a semicircular shape - and not too wide. Any ideas?

Any tunnel in the Alps ... there are some nice long ones on the way into Italy (out the back of Chambery, through the Frejus Tunnel, then drop down to Turin, or even better hang a left and up the Col-d'Iseron back to France). Just don't get stuck behind a truck going uphill passing another 1mph slower for 5km with the roof down ... choke choke choke.

Also the Autoroute above the French/Italian Riviera (forget the name number). This road is either a bridge or a tunnel as you drive along ... niiice.

Not quite suitable for a Sunday spin out though ...

Went through the Blackwall Tunnel in London one day in the Cerbera...

Sports exhaust, 2nd gear, windows open and on the run off it was spitting flames as it popped and banged

Old geezer stopped me at the traffic lights the other side of the tunnel and told me that I "had a hole in my exhaust and may be on fire!!!!"

No Porsche does that benno.....

Beg to differ flasher but the a 996 with headers changed and 100 cell cats will give a similar result, removing the cats altogether will give same result

Yes Lee, but the cerbera does that for two hundred squid on a sports exhaust How much would it cost you to get a Porsche to do it??
And it would still sound like an expensive beach buggy

All relative Flasher if you can afford the 65k for the 996 then 2.5k for the exhaust mods is a small price to pay, as for the beech buggy noise you can't have been in a 996 with these mod, if you go to powertours go and see the GT3's in the pits to get a similar sound.

Still my old Cerbera Speed Six did sound fantastic with the sports exhaust and de-catted

Lee

I have been in Benno's many times. I hate to say this but it's a fabulous car (Oh my God I said it )
Now he has had the sports exhaust fitted it sounds the bollox too

However, even Ben will tell you that NOTHING sounds like a Cerb with a sports exhaust. I'm not just saying it because I used to own one, it was one of the main reasons I bought one!!!

Another tunnel is the A50 through Stoke on Trent.
The ceiing panels of the tunnel have already been fetched off as they were falling off through vibration.
Only problem is 50mph limit, but that gives you time to hear the TVR overture.

Hi Flasher,

Your right about the Cerbera I had a de-catted Speed Six with sports exhaust my 996 had the sports exhaust and it was mapped to the revs of the car ok but not loud enough, I then went for the header change and the 100 cell cats, totally different beastie now, not as many pops and bangs as the Cerbera but a very decent growl to it, Benno maybe interested in looking at this for his 996?

Cheers

Lee.

Have to agree with Jeff Morgan on this one, the Bryn Glas tunnels in Newport also have a good run up to them to give a good build up, just in time to drop to third and make the ground rumble!.

Not really a tunnel, but there's a good underpass in W.G.C. going past the shopping centre, ideal for a good 2nd/3rd gear blast....

The underground car park in the centre of Le Mans was good fun aswell .. only set off 3 car alarms

Drive mine through Blackwall twice a day and still can't stop accelerating into the tunnel in 2nd and then listening to crack and pops on the overrun, everyday. The S now having no prebaffle and an oval silencer it is extremely loud and chucks the odd flame ! For an S !!

Rotherhithe Tunnel is better though. There is also a tunnel up onto the Kingsway which is very tight, sounds fantastic.

Can't remember the road No but the tunnel in Lewes is pretty good too !

The Channel Tunnel would be ideal for TVR owners ( have to remove railway tracks obviously !! ), just imagine 20 miles of TVR surround sound music, HEAVEN also stop those illegal immigrants entering.......they would need ear-defenders
