Tamron AF vs Nikon AF
Discussion
Hi all, I've a Nikon D40x, it's got the standard 18-55mm lens and I would like to upgrade it to an 18-200mm lens to give me more flexibility.
Usual issue around costs I guess;
The Nikon 18-200mm AF Lens is approx £370 and the similar Tamron is £165
Is it really false economy to buy the Tamron? I'm not a pro, just an enthusiastic amateur and a newbie at that. I just wonder if I would be wasting my money on the Tamron.
Thoughts/experiences anyone?

Go for Nikon, it'll work... goodness knows whether the Tamron will.
Also - the Nikon lens has the magic letters 'ED' in the long title. Modern Nikon lenses that have these two important letters are definately of good quality. Much better optics than the std 18-55.
ETA- Just be warned... it's a DX lens, which will work fine with the D40, and if you upgrade to a D300 it'll be fine also, but if you go to a D700, it will work, but will only utilise +/- 60% of the cameras pixels. So this isn't a 'lifetime' lens (unless you stick forever with the DX format... unlikely).

To be honest, I only got the camera last week and I can't see me needing to change it for some considerable time!! It's one of those moments of clarity you get when you suddenly realise you have been p1ssing about with an utterly rubbish camera for ages!!Also - the Nikon lens has the magic letters 'ED' in the long title. I think on fair reflection it's got to be worth getting the Nikon one, only cause you know it's capability is not in question...just have to justify the additional spend to the gaffer!! Gulp!
