Footrest question please

My build is going well, now that I have got past gthe panelling !

I am considering how to mount the footrest - should I rivet it in permanently or try to do it with rivnuts (in case I subsequently decide to carpet)

Or, maybe it is not too difficult to carpet around it even if it is rivetted in ?

Any ideas or tips would be most welcome

Are you considering a co-drivers foot rest or just a driver's clutch foot rest?

I would just rivet it in.
If you do carpet later (as I have) then you only need to carpet up to it and cut a small flap to go into the open end of the rest as you will not be able to see that the carpet does not continue below or behind the rest.

Peter - it is the co-drivers foot rest that I bought from the factory.

One option you may like to think about, doubtless you will want to install some added goodies, like radio, alarm system etc. I placed my goodies boxes behind the passenger foot rest and made the footrest removable using Rivet nuts, just a thought!

You will find it useful to fit both a drivers and passenger footrest.
Both are available from CBS.

It may also be worth considering when fitting said above items that where the drivers clutch footrest is next to the navigators foot rest, fit it a little further forward so as your foot also rests along side the NFR and stops positively as when you are driving enthusiastically, the more braced you are the more comfortable it is and can also be annoying touching the foot of your passenger on and off.

What sort of passenger footrest did you fit? I'm putting the battery same place as you, am struggling to find an off the shelf footrest that won't force passengers to sit like contortionists. I needs to be adjustable or removable in case the battery needs to come out.

Is the GTW in a position for you to take a photo of it?

^^^ Like most things on the GTW, we used an off the shelf item, from CBS if memory serves, and modified it
It is fixed along its length on the bottom edge to the floor on a piano hinge and the bracket that holds down the battery has the provision so that a couple of Dzus fasteners fitted to the top of the footrest can be tightened onto them. I have used quite a large Optima battery but you could use a smaller one and free up more leg room for your passenger. The max legroom thing was not really top of my considerations list but I have not had anyone complain so far, except for my 86 year old Nan that is, but that is because she is only 4'8" and could not reach the footrest at all!

I'm not convinced you need a passengers footrest.

A clutch foot rest yes, and this would act a a passenger/driver separator at the same time. But I find it more comfortable to stretch out as a passenger and have your legs straight.

Thank you very much for all input - I am even more undecided now !!

I think I will leave the footrests and move on to something else while I think about it....

Having said that, I would be interested to see a picture of a clutch footrest in situ if anyone has one.

Bit late on this one. Yes mine rivetted in and carpet goes around. I use it as a driver rest on long journeys as like to stretch leg across (passengers permitting). As a suggestion I have attached carpet using velcro, which means it can be easily removed for cleaning.

I have completed many more miles as a passenger than a driver of these cars and although it can be nice to stretch your legs from time to time, it is more comfortable to be able to push your feet onto a solid platform and not have to be 'flapping about' and staying out of the drivers space so to speak. Lets face it, visits to the fuel station are on such a regular basis that stretching ones legs can be a fairly well practiced event anyhow .

I made up a clutch footrest from some spare bits of aluminium and used rivnuts to fix it to the front bulkhead (which is panelled, as is the floor).
