I have read through an awful lot of 'first bike' threads and unfortunately feel the need to start another one.

What would you recommend to a newbie biker (DAS in a couple of weeks) who, for no particular reason other than he likes the idea, has his heart set on buying a Triumph? Add in the paltry budget of around £1500 and I am struggling and wondering whether or not to shelve the Triumph idea for a while and buy an ER5 or similar.

Help?

There was a TT600 at my local dealers for around 2k with about 30 odd thousand on it.
The only problem being is that because Triumph isnt the biggest company around repairing / servicing tends to be a bit more!

Erm, i need to disagree with that there comment. I've got a Triumph D675, and a Honda Hornet (Honda being the biggest manufacturer there is).

Bike Service Interval Average Cost

D675 6,000 miles £165

Hornet 4,000 miles £175

The older Triumphs may cost you, but for a learner, something like a new Scrambler would be brilliant fun. And they look cool as feck. Bit over budget, mind.

Damn, it lost my formatting. Never mind, you get the idea. A modern triumph is 2/3 service cost of a Honda, from my experience.

Thanks for the replies. I really like the TT600, and the older T595. I will have to find one locally and see just how small they are (i am told they are tiny - which is good as I am not very big either).

I am lucky too as I have a Triumph dealer about 20 minutes away from me, so servicing etc shouldn't be too much of a problem. With a 6k interval it'll probably only need doing once a year anyway.

I have seen a few older TTs on Ebay in my price range but I am always dubious of Ebay for cars/bikes etc. Does anyone do inspections similar to RAC car ones, as I really wouldn't know what to look for?
