Say following the American model.

Then they would be directly accountable to the public and idiocies such as those Brunstrom tries to perpetrate would get them thrown out of office (unless of course the voters wanted them) - Streaky

Yes absolutely. Cheif Constable should be an elected position.

That way local communities would get their specific concerns addressed as a priority.

elected or not they would still be controlled by Government spin. Does it really matter who screws up the country and how they got into that position!

Just look at how well our elected MP's do.

Don't you mean MEPs and Civil Servants (a double misnomer if ever there was one!). MPs have nothing to do these days!

No they should not.

How would a BNP Chief Constable go down,

or possibly a Friends of the Earth Chief Constable.

Best person for the job everytime.

Demcoracy has this way of ensuring we ended up free but governed by turnip-heads.

Definately yes. I've thought this for a long time now.

Its about time the Police Chiefs started being more accountable to the people they are supposed to serve.

Its time there was some real motivation to do something productive & tackle the real problems we have at the moment, problems which seem to be low on the police's current agenda (at least in the eyes of the public rightly or wrongly).

In principle, yes. But in practice, no.

Considering the vast majority of people who stand for public office are self serving idiots then who knows what we would end up with.

Yes they should and they can not be affiliated to any party. British democracy is not all it should be.

Agreed - party politics are ruining this country. I think there is a shift to electing councilors on local issues at a local level (except for BNP successes recently).

I have often thought of standing as 'independent' to help start cleaning out this country.

Maybe all PHers should stand as local councillors in their wards on a pro-car platform?!
