I have just fitted electronic ignition to my e type, after fitting they recommend that the timing is checked, the timimg marks are underneath.
Can anyone tell me how to use a timing light (under the car) and adjust the distributor without removing the bonnett?!!!!

two methods. One a long term solution and one is the normal method.

Normal method:
Jack the car up and fit axel stands. Lift the bonnet but be aware that the bonnet support springs (or gas strut depending on model) *might* not hold the bonnet open when it is jacked up. Personally i used a length of wood as a fail safe strut. With teh car jacked up and the bonnet open you can start the engine and use a strobe quite easily.

Long term solution:
Replace the crankshaft damper with one from another 4.2 Jaguar (such as an older XJ)where the timing marks are on the passenger side rather than underneath the car. The engine block is predrilled to accept a timing marker so replacing both items solvs the problem for ever and it is MUCH easier. Having raced my E-Type for a few years this was by far the easiest means of checking timing. Remember that when mounting the timing indicator to ensure that the number 1 piston is absolutely TDC and then bolt on the timing indicator so that "0" on the crankshaft damper aligns with the pointer.

I can take a photo of mine if you want...
